Mayday! Russian jet sees off the Red Arrows

They may be called the Red Arrows but the RAF’s aerial acrobatics team has nothing to do with the Russians.

Britons who spotted a government post online promoting the flying squad today may have been confused, however, to see that it displayed the silhouette of a Russian fighter jet. The Department for International Trade used a picture of a Sukhoi Su-30 or 33 rather than the BAE Hawk T1 that the RAF pilots fly. The former is twice the length and a very different shape.

The tweeted poster also had a mountain and the caption: “The Red Arrows can fly at 48,000ft. That’s higher than Mount Everest.” Critics said that that was an odd thing to emphasise when the jets’ main role is to perform stunts for audiences on the ground.

The department deleted the image, which had been posted to promote a Red Arrows tour of the US.

Kinda sums up the standard of journalism these days

Parson,

Doubt that was anything to do with a Journalist. Most probably contracted out as well so most probably nothing to do with the Dept for Int Trade.

Wasn't referring to the mistake of the aircraft type - though that was probably made by someone of similar ilk. When I see a Red Arrows article, I have a game to see if I can spot words like 'acrobatic', 'stunt', 'aces', 'heros' etc.

Parson,

Nor was I.

And from your lofty patronising condescending perch, that is precisely how 99.9% of ordinary people describe the Red Arrows.

pr00ne - ah, that's good to know. Occasionally, I get worried I may have fallen off.

It's the Reeeeeeeeeeeeeed Arrrrooooows.... where's the car?

They dissappointed at Cosford, normally they display near the end which gives me time to head for the car and be gone before those that stand and gawp at the same reds display year after year drool, but some muppet screwed it up this year and put them mid display, thus screwing up my get away plan.

Ah Nutloose, you should have left after the Reds, as I did. Yes, I missed some of the display, but was home in twenty minutes. Last year it was over two hours to even get out of the car park

About the tricky question of aircraft types and identification.....

At the beginning of this week, a media source in Derbyshire kindly informed readers as to the location of the Dak and Hurricane this weekend ..so far, so good we would all no doubt agree......but then, alas, said media source has a habit of including a "helpful" video on the topic being reported.....such as what to do if you drive into a flooded ford and the engine stops for example and similar "stating the bleeding obvious " offerings.......I admit, I didn't view the whole video, possibly because the opening shots showed neither Dak, or Hurricane, but, erm.....a Tornado.

Easy mistake to make really... ....

Not up to the guy who writes the display programme; you should remember they try to do as many displays as they can in one day and in this case, probably had another display elsewhere scheduled after Cosford.
At Farnborough, the local police always asked me NOT to put them at the end of the show so as to ease road congestion but this was seldom possible.

There's probably a company in the USA which operates Sukhoi types for ACT like they do Migs.

The dangers of clip art.Same thing happened in US a couple of years back - material promoting a USAF event used a Flanker outline

Unfortunately.('cos they've never met them)
I used to enjoy the nightly 'banter' in the bar every evening at Akrotiri between the RA and 100 Sqdn, especially when one of 100 Sqdn used the Tannoy at reception to announce something rude about them.

About the tricky question of aircraft types and identification.....

Reminds me of The Times Defence Correspondent writing in the Times a few days ago (on 7th June) about the D-Day anniversary celebrations. She noted that in June 1944 Vera Lynn was on the way back from the Far East and her "Private Jet" had flown into Tunisia.
I waited for the correspondent to tell us that Vera Lynn had used her iPhone to call London to discuss her future troop's concerts - but she didn't!
