Does anyone have any first hand experience with Sharm el Sheik airport in the last 6 months or so as far as queueing at security and checkin are concerned? Some horror reviews on Google talking about 5h queues to get through security etc.

We're not even allowed to fly there any more... not even as an alternative airport. Security assessment demanded so.

Experience from some weeks ago at midnight, I arrived 2,5h before departure.
I almost missed the flight despight having a business class ticket.

Those are your steps at SSH:
- xray #1: Can take very long, no fast line for business class. They only have one xray per queue.
For international departures make extra sure you take the right queue. There are two for international departures, depends on airline which is the right one.
Otherwise the friendly guy will point you back to the start of the other one (sadly thats not a joke!)
- screening for explosives with adhesives quicktest and bag search (was quick)
- checkin: empty at that time
- passport and exit card control plus biometric stuff: No fastline for business class, can be bypassed for 25€. They are now taking a foto and fingerprints, which takes ages because it very often doesn't work at the first try and needs to be repeated. The five open counters were not enough to keep up with that. I think it took me more than an hour in that queue alone.
- xray #2, including "take your shoes off"
- Bus boarding as always. If the bus is already gone, you'll be screwed.
