Info on my grandfather

my grandfather Stanley Miller was a pathfinder (navigator) as I understand it. I don’t know where to find any information on him can anyone help?

Do you have any further information to help narrow down the search? For example:
- Where was he born, or where did he live?
- Did he survive the war?
- Do you know his parents' names, his wife's name (presumably your grandmother)
- Did he have a middle name?
- Do you know when he was born?

It's very easy to mis-identify someone, so any additional info you might have will be very helpful.

He was originally born in Peckham in London but moved to Suffolk (Leiston and then Knodishall)

Yes he did survive the war and went onto train recruits and then went on to work for a firm called Richard Garretts & Sons in Leiston

I do not know his parents name but my Nan was called Jean Miller (nee paternoster) and they were cousins

i do not know when he was born

Dr Jennie Gray runs the Pathfinder Archive, they are affiliated to the Heritage Centre at Wyton.
best contact is through their Facebook Page. The Wyton web site with the Pathfinder stuff on appears to be under reconstruction.
Jennie is pretty proactive and sent me stuff from the ORB relating to a particular Pathfinder a couple of weeks ago.

There is a Stanley A. Miller listed as born Camberwell Registration District in September quarter 1922. Mothers maiden name was Paternoster.

Also a marriage between Samuel Miller and Elizabeth H Paternoster, Camberwell District ,June quarter 1920.

I think that must be him my Nan was a paternoster and they were cousins it is quite an unusual name so it must be him thank you how would I go about finding his records I’ve emailed someone as suggested earlier up on post so waiting to hear from them

It helps greatly if you can get his service records through the link provided by Lordflashart in his post above. It will cost you £30, but it will give you all of the units that he served on. Once you have his squadron then I suggest looking up to see if that Sqn Association is still active - if it is then contact them - they should have access to Sqn records. Failing that, Facebook has several good Bomber Command research sites - find what looks to be the most helpful and ask for details on there - you may well find someone with access to the Sqn operation record books and should be able to name his crew and the raids that he flew on. If you need help decoding the service record then once again, people on the facebook sites are most helpful. Good Hunting! (You may even find a crew photograph if you are lucky). PS. DON'T part with any money to anyone promising to research for you - there are lots of people who will do this for nothing!! All it will cost is the £30 for the admin fee to get his service record.

Possible sighting ….

This might possibly be your grandad - the details fit but treat with a big caution .....

Flt Sgt Stanley Alfred Miller RAFVR, Service No 1389524 on 35 Squadron in 1943.
Awarded Distinguished Flying Medal - London Gazette No 4562 15 Oct 1943

35 Squadron was at Linton-on-Ouse til August 1942 with Halifaxes then moved to Gravely near Huntingdon to become a Pathfinder Squadron, changing to Lancasters in March 1944. A whole squadron website here - https://35squadron.wordpress.com/category/1943-losses-and-incidents/

I found additional references to a Sgt SA Miller at RAF Chedburgh in 1942 (perhaps on the heavy operational conversion unit following navigator training) and to a Flt Lieut SA Miller in 1945 – possible career progression, but they may not be the same bloke.

Have you any other relatives who may know anything further about your grandfather...?
He will also have been entitled to several medals,`Pathfinder` badge ,and DFM medal ,so it would be worth tracking them down as well..

Unfortunately there is no one left he did get all those medals
