Hi all, I've got about 500 hours SEP now with my standalone FAA PPL license, and am starting IFR training. Considering that the step from there towards a CPL is very small, I am considering to get the CPL in parallel. However I'm not clear what I can or cannot do in europe with an FAA CPL/IR license. Am I allowed to freelance for air taxi companies? Am I allowed to do aerial work in my own N-reg aircraft?

Does anyone know what the possibilities & limitations are?

Short and rough: flying in EU with an FAA license for an european operator (e.g. VP registered aircraft) can get you in trouble.

I'm familiar with that EASA ruling regarding foreign licenses in Europe. I've tried to follow what was going on for a number of years, then gave up when it kept being postponed and in the end became very unclear. I heard from someone knowledgeable a few months ago, that the ruling was again postponed to 2020. Am I missing something? I'm basically doing all my private flying using only my FAA PPL.

An FAA CPL/IR is of very little use in europe. It can't be used without a validation for commercial purposes on EASA aircraft. You will get only one validation, the idea being that you have that time to convert your licence to EASA. The IR is worth getting in that it is relatively easy now to use the competency based route to convert it to an EASA IR, and of course you can fly on it privately. A skill test, air law written and human performance written will allow conversion to an EASA private licence.
