An Italian ex-fighter jet fighter pilot, and his French counterpart have had a miraculous escape when their military trainer aircraft crash landed in a paddock on the Fleurieu Peninsula after engine failure.
The pair were making their final approach into Goolwa Airport when the Aermacchi S-211 turbo-fan powered military trainer suddenly lost power just after midday.
The quick thinking pilot managed to crash land the plane in a paddock near Kessell Rd at Goolwa narrowly avoiding irrigation equipment.
It landed and slid but incredibly both the pilot and his passenger escaped the bumpy landing uninjured.

Crash landing!! What crash landing? Nicely done!
By the look of the tail fin, they went under the irrigator.

Yes - looks like the slide didn't start until just after he went under it. And I wonder what that magpie is thinking?! :)

Maggie No. 1 - 'Caw, those jet planes go fast - don't they'
Maggie No 2. - 'So would you if yer ass was on fire'...…
All's well that ends well - looks like bloody good job!
p.s. What's the approach speed in one of those things?
Anybody? Just curious is all....

Stall speed is around 74 knots.
Thought it may have been higher with those little wings. Apparently they are a quite lightweight for their class, made from 60% composite materials and they run a Citation engine. Sound like a pretty good unit for a private owner. The ejection seats have been deactivated in this particular aircraft I also read.

Maybe the irrigator went over it after it came to stop.
A remarkable landing with gear remaining intact in sodden earth - well done that pilot :ok:

Maybe the irrigator went over it after it came to stopPilot said, Although safely on the ground, Mr Whalley still had to steer the aircraft underneath a low-hanging sprinkler system.
As Im ploughing through the paddock it was like go in between the pipes, which we managed to do, he said.
(But) its taken a couple of inches off the tail... Not an ideal outcome but given an engine failure Im pretty happy with how it all turned out.
