A vacancy has arisen for a Flight Lieutenant (Pilot) to serve as a Qualified Flying Instructor at Manchester and Salford University Air Squadron, RAF Woodvale on Volunteer Ex-Regular Reserve Service Terms and Conditions of Service.
As the Qualified Flying Instructor on Manchester and Salford University Air Squadron (MASUAS) and an Air Experience Flight supervisor and checking officer, you will conduct: air and ground instruction for ab-initio aircrew; air experience flying for members of the Air Cadet Organization; and supervision of AEF and UAS flying. Additionally, you will be working as a member of a small team and be required to undertake a range of secondary duties associated with the supervision of flying and the management of the Squadron. Furthermore, in addition to your duties with the UAS, but within the terms and conditions of VeRR service, you will be required to carry out those duties associated with a commissioned officer of your rank. Specifically, you may be required to:
Deploy with the Sqn on flying detachments.
Act as a deputy to OC 10 AEF in the supervision and management of the AEF.
Undertake and supervise a range of extracurricular activities, including sport and adventurous training, and may deploy away from their home station for camps at the discretion of the OC.
Attend some training evenings during university term times.
Undergo training and maintain currency for the following: Flying Supervisors Course; Human Factors / Error Management; Aviation Medicine Training Wing; and Defence Train the Trainer.
The post requires you to be trained for the post and you will not be expected to undergo flying training to undertake your duties. QFIs will be required to attend Standards Flight (RAF Wittering) annually for routine flying standardisation.
Eligibility and Period of Service.
Unless already holding a commission in the Reserve Air Forces the successful applicant will be required to be commissioned in the RAFR with a liability for call-out for permanent service.
The appointment is on VeRR service (90 days a year) TCoS in accordance with AP 3392 Vol 7 until 31 January 2022.
Confirmation of appointment will depend on successful completion of a RAF Medical Board. Personnel who do not meet the Age/Permanent Joint Medical Employment Standard (PJMES) may apply for the appointment but will only be considered subject to an executive waiver process on a case by case basis.
Candidates who have been out of regular or reserve service for more than 5 years will not be considered for this appointment.
Personnel currently serving in the Regular Royal Air Force should be mindful of the current Early Termination Minimum Waiting Time (MWT) for their respective Rank, Branch/Trade and ensure this MWT is compatible with the post sponsors proposed start date, prior to applying.
Applicants of an equivalent rank from sister Services may apply, but will only be accepted into RAFR service if an appropriate Branch/Trade can be identified via the relevant Branch & Trade Advisor. Furthermore, the transfer will only be made at the individual’s current ‘equivalent’ rank and not on promotion. Finally, Branch/Trade Advisor approval must be agreed before the interview.
Pension Issues. Personnel who qualify for a service pension should take financial advice from Defence Business Services (DBS) Pensions Department on the effect that undertaking reserve service has on their pension (details can be found on the JPA splash screen). Annual Salary and Leave. Pay will be in accordance with the pay scales published for the reserve air forces. VeRR service personnel are eligible for annual leave and public holidays in accordance with AP 3392 Vol 7 and JSP 760.
Accommodation. Personnel serving on VeRR TCoS are not eligible to occupy Single Living Accommodation.
