I thought life jacket demos as part of the safety briefing were required if your plane flew over water, but seemingly not. I’ve just flown Birmingham to Munich with Lufthansa and the demo just consisted of seatbelts, oxygen masks and where the exits are. It’s not the first time either on LH, but I assumed I’d just had a mental glitch the first time. Can anyone in the know shed any light on what is and is not required in the safety briefing?

Hello jthjth and welcome to the cabin - that's a good question to start with.

I flew regularly between Brum and Düsseldorf with Eurowings. Always had the life jacket demo. Certainly surprises me that LH don't. Maybe they reckon that with only 6 minutes over water at 30000 feet plus they are well within gliding distance to land?

Separate point: Is it not true that if flying only over land the life jacket demo is not required? Lots of lakes around in certain countries. Just saying because when you think about it the US Airways flight from La Guardia to Charlotte would have been flying over land. Yet they ended up in the Hudson!

A bit unsure about it but I seem to recall that a distance greater of 50 miles off-shore is required before a demo is required that's in the US and please take it with a lot of salt.

Just flown back, Frankfurt to Birmingham, with Lufthansa. Again no life jacket bit in the safety demo. The plane was routed via Amsterdam over the North Sea, so a not inconsiderable stretch of water was covered. Curious....
