Folks,

Got a call today from JC asking me to head to AKL for interview, FO position. Anyone got current pay and conditions ? Please share, there is a lot of old info available. Some up to date intel would be much appreciated.

From what I've been told by a friend who is on the ground course now with JC, 130K + when CTL, all under Qantas AOC, possible options to move to mainline as you now have a senority amongst the group.

Captains earn around $260k kiwi total and the tax rate is about 30%?

Time to command is a lot quicker than in Oz too and they donít work too hard.

i very much doubt that a JC captain is on $260 k total.
More like $170-190 k total.

The top tax rate is 33%, no super.

1st year F/O pay is 104k

Command 1st year is 190k

JC captains used to be paid around $160k in year one then $170k in years 2+ along with a $20-$25k retention bonus paid annually on your anniversary - if you left prior to that date, you got nothing.

FO’s were about $90k Year 1 and $100k Years 2+ then a $10-$15k retention bonus.

However, I believe they finally (after years of failed negotiations) ratified a new contract (which I don’t have) so make sure any info you get applies to the new one.

All of the JC Aircraft (which they didn’t own anyway) have been moved from ZK to VH regos giving QF more flexibility and reduced costs. This makes JC even more of a “crewing supplier” as they no longer have a fleet of specific Aircraft to crew. They could provide 50 Pilots or 500 at the whim of QF. Is this one more nail in the coffin for the future of JC or a step closer to integration with Mainline similar to VANZ went through with Virgin?

Crystal ball stuff, but if it were me, I’d consider J* a safer option long term. But if you want a quick Command to take overseas then JC is probably quicker. I believe J* NZ has been crewed with AUS Captains lately rather than upgrading local FO’s.

I don't work there either, but a friend of mine has just started his ground course with JC and he's told me the starting rate is 130k+? Because of the new contract and being under QF AoC..

Only relaying what I've been told. Don't shoot lol

Ahh... no. A Group list is something that AIPA has talked about, but the company is not interested in.

Ahh I see. My apologies. I only really have second-hand info coming in from a friend whos trying to convince me to apply. Still seems like a great stepping stone coming from a light turboprop and getting into a Jet? In his situation as well as mine..

Having read all 3 contracts for VANZ, Jetstar NZ, and Jetconnect, I'm curious to know why you think it's the worst deal.

In fact I think the new contract is better in some respects than the others.

As populations increase ,ruling elite will require you to work harder for less , ie more people to compete for dwindling jobs.

if you look at the US model many pilots need a second job, Walmart,Taxis ect to make enough to get by
If it’s $ that’s going to make you happy then you might need to look at scamming careers.
If you really like flying enjoy it and don’t worry about the coin, life’s too short!

That may have been the case a few years ago, but not sure that is the current state of affairs?
My understanding was that wages and conditions in the US (incl regionals) was pretty good at the moment!

With a huge cost of entry a small population from which to draw and increasing retirement rates, bottom feeding 'creations' like Jetconnect are the first to show signs of duress.
Of course hiding remuneration from a pilot until hired might muddy the water for a while, but airline management the world over is in part to blame:
HR and IR have, due historically unlimited supply of pilots driven terms and conditions so low that they fail to attract applicants. Those applicants are now fewer in numbers than taking the ridiculous step of hiding salary from an applicant is considered normal.

Rest assured the next 'Stream Lead' delivered story of woe will try and contain any upward movement in terms and conditions.

To paraphrase Sully, "No airline pilot wants their child to become a pilot"

The poster above says they work for them and YTD have grossed $241k. Although that is not a huge salary for an Airline Captain in 2019, neither is it so low as to fail to attract applicants. Especially if you’re in the NZ job market.

Why precisely did Jetconnect exist?
It existed to arbitrage Trans-Tasman relations and undermine terms and conditions.
It had, after all no lease expense for its 'fleet'. It's CEO the hapless Paul Daff, didn't know the other directors, how much was in the bank account and begrudgingly admitted all pilot payments and bills were paid from Sydney.
That isn't a 'business' is but another IR strategy.
Hiding remuneration is unusual and doing so suggests that oversupply of applicants isn't something they expect.

Assuming the Captain earning $241k is on Year 3, that's approximately $50k of above their base. $70k in another posters suggestion of $260k.

Do those figures include non-taxable allowances such as meals and overnights? Do they include any training/management margins? Lets assume they don't and those figures are gross taxable based on flight hours.

I'm not familiar with how JC calculate their overtime/incentive pay rates, but using the Air NZ CEA as a comparison, on that base salary those take home figures would require 80-90 hour rosters. Admittedly, when all you do is Tasman returns it might not be too bad a lifestyle. Unfortunately, I gather that's not the case with plenty of single sector and PAX duties, especially ZQN.

So yes, JC Captains are earning fairly decent money at the moment compared to their base. But they're having to work for it....

How are people finding the rosters with the 10 days off. Looking at applying in the not too distant future and will stay living a 2 hours commute (drive), dont want to uproot the family to live in Auckland.

Does anybody know residency requirements to apply for pilot to Jetconnect? Is NZ Skilled Resident Visa enough, or it must be PR at list?
