The road system to the Pacific West Coast is not in great shape - potholes and steep ranging terrain. Flights take 30-45 mins versus at least 6 hours by 4WD or suitable transport.
Best Western Hotels do offer hotel bus between locations for reasonable price (as an alternative to driving yourself).
Many speed traps on the Pacific Routes!

CentralFlow,

thanks once again for the info.
I look like going during the raining period which would add to the need for a 4wd.
As flying to the coast sounds the better option which is the more respected/safe airline of the two available (if there is a differance) and also one that will take surfboards (if you know).
The flying around mountainous terrain is not a problem as I worked in PNG for awhile doing "bush" operations in the BN2 Islander and Twin Otter.

Regards

Travelair (website) is best option (having tried both) and they do take surfboards for a small fee! Downtown Pavas airport is tiny and very manageable! (Schedules & fares etc on-line).
Flying much better option than driving!
Pura Vida!
