Found this picture on another forum. I presume there is an interesting backstory here. Does anyone have any info? Thanks.

I was groundcrew on 3F at the time 1990 or 91. If I recall correctly it was late afternoon and we’d been waiting for authority to drop a 1000lb inert off the the centreline from a GR5. It finally came through and a pair took off in a downpour (to be accurate one did, the other ended up in the Ems) for the range.
I won’t comment on the reasons as I’m sure it’s recorded more accurately than I can remember but I do recall the pilots name and he did get out safely.

It obviously ran out of ground effect.

It would make a nice little narrowboat.

After reading the accident report, which jogged my memory, I believe the pilot broke his ankle.

yes, Mark Z.

Was this the Harrier that incorrectly aborted it's take-off because it was just a few knots too slow to get airborne?

What else would you expect from 3(F)?

Trying to stop a Harrier with the taxi brake / parking brake / footrest at CTO speeds. Gulp.

Didn't know Harriers carried life rafts that big.

As a non-technical person: what happens to the well-washed Harrier airframe afterwards? Scrapped or repaired?

Airframe was allocated to Brough as a test rig.

Dan. Good spot. Of course all the space in the SS liferaft is taken up by the 'special' boots worn ONLY by Harrier mates.

I bet there are still guys out there wearing them.....

I was at Gut at the time. One wag in the mess said "of course, the most embarrassing things is watching all the transfers float off down the Ems..."

I was at Wittering at the time and we had the one with a Kapton fire in the back end. For a while there was a suggestion that our front and the 3(F) back end should be made into a single aircraft, but the idea was later discounted - dunno why.

Love the liferaft.

If it wasn’t for that, they’d have been done for. :D
