I've just acquired a P10 compass, in need of a little TLC. On the back is a stamp " 63/0]R[45, (the two square brackets actually being two thick vertical lines). Can anyone shed light on the meaning? I presume the 45 might refer to the year of manufacture?

Look closely at the 63, at you positive it is not 6B?

If it is 6B the rest is more likely 0?45 where the R is also a number.

If both are numbers that makes it a stores section and reference.

Thanks, Pontius. I've done a double-check, and it is certainly 63. The oblique is scratched, and could possibly be a 7. If so 637 in a thinner typeface. The 0 (stripe) R (stripe) 45 are much more positive and although aligned, look to be a different stamp.
I'll see if I can post a photograph later today.

As an engineer that looks like repair # 6370 in the year '45

Thanks, Tony. That suggests my original idea of 1945 is correct. Presumably built before that, but that's good enough for me. Now to clean it up; gently and carefully, being aware of the materials. Storing well away from others, and possibly under glass anyway.

Thank you, my 6B/ would have been stamped or etched into the case. That is very much an applied mark. On other equipment you might see it written in yellow paint.

Compass RAF part # 6A/726, out of service 1945 part # then became 6A/0726.
