I wonder which aircraft the enquirer was thinking about?

I sat in a Tornado at Bruggen and had a coffee and biscuits with the staish afterwards. That is as near as it gets.

Extraordinary bolleaux.

Maybe someone heard the name Tornado and got the wrong end of the stick (or rather, the shovel)....

I would've thought any Tornado pilot could have a wonderful evening in the cockpit sipping cocktails and talking about themselves.

you're thinking of Harrier Pilots there.

I love the bit about being unsuitable for Cocktail Parties and Gala Dinners! Talk about understating the point.:)

Of course it wasn't unknown for parties to be hosted in....larger aircraft.

At one Akrotiri Open Day, someone realised that the drunken young lady making a fool of herself at the OM evening do wasn't exactly an officer. So she was hoiked out and charged. When later questioned as to when / where she'd started drinking that day, she replied "In the VC10"...:uhoh:

One host once welcomed a visiting senior USAF 2-star with some 'Electric OJ'. Which he rather enjoyed, "Good job the General isn't flying today", the host mentioned to the General's horse-holder. "Well, he's supposed to be flying his C-21A* home this afternoon", came the reply...:\

*C-21A = Lear Jet

My head still remembers the (F3) 25 Sqn Gin Mines. There were some cock tales told on those occasions. Happy Daze.

6 Sqn are still fans of Gin Mines, my head the next day was not.

No idea what you are talking about...or the cocktail party on the back of an F-15E that we cajoled a young 2Lt to have with the Piper-Heidsieck girls in 6 inch heels. His Col was not very happy with the state of the paintwork after that, but the Champers was free! ;)

Fairy stories; everyone knows that there was no drinking allowed within 50ft of an aircraft and no smoking within 24 hrs of flying....

I've set off lots of car alarms at BoB cocktail parties - does that count?

Farnborough '94. We were working with / filming some Russian 'guests' at the show. And their rather amazing Su-27.

All was going well right up until when we were invited onto their support IL-76, where vodka was much in evidence and freely handed out (thanks lads, hic!.) Except one of their groundcrew, who had obviously enjoyed much refreshment that day, got us into the cockpit and suddenly started flicking switches, and turning everything on, declaring that we were 'going flying'.

Hmmm .. a couple of very sober days followed.. but we got the footage and nothing was ever said about what may or may not have happened on that day.

True
