Good day Rotorheads,

I need to do my Heli PPL renewal end of January. Can the renewal be postponed until April for example? Or will I have to rewrite exams if it lapse after the 24 months? I am going to phone CAA tomorrow and find out but would like to find out earlier if I can.

Thank you

I believe you can let your license lapse for upto 5 years. At this point you will need to do your license again.

Also I think that if you let your License/Type ratings lapse over 12 months you just need to have had a recommended amount of training at an ATO (This could be any number of hours, totally dependant on your knowledge and skill levels) and for the Head of training to recommend you for the renewal with a PPL flight examiner.

If done within the 12 months it is just an LPC with an FE. Also you might require a minimum number of hours flight throughout the year. 5 it was last time i looked but it was a while ago.

I recommend speaking to an ATO (Flight School) and asking them as it will be easier than getting any information out of the authorities.

I assume you are asking about renewing your type.

expiry shorter than 3 months: no supplementary requirements;
expiry longer than 3 months but shorter than 1 year: a minimum of two training sessions;
expiry longer than 1 year but shorter than 3 years: a minimum of three training sessions in which the most important malfunctions in the available systems are covered;
expiry longer than 3 years: the applicant should again undergo the training required for the initial issue of the rating or, in case of helicopter, the training required for the ‘additional type issue’, according to other valid ratings held.
