View Full Version : Labor In Power

If what just happened in Victorian elections (labor landslide) happens nationwide at the next Federal election, GA is finished. Regional airports will be sold for property development and the regulatory burden on aviation will keep increasing.

There is now no point in my former call for political campaigns on behalf of GA, they will only antagonise an eventual Labor Government - who will be vindictive.

Vindictive is a mild way of putting it.

Federally speaking, once again "it is time". The perpetual cycle of checks and balances reveals now that the coalition has performed so badly that Labor is in the transcendent. As we have just seen in Victoria. Those of us with vested interests in GA
will feel the pain. (But to predict vindictive responses is, in one sense, to invite them.)

You forgot to add this is a party political message on behalf of the Liberal party!
I don't think it will matter who is in power. That battle was fought and lost years ago. Regional airports are mostly owned by councils and charge accordingly. Ever heard of Avdata?
Most of your posts make sense Sunfish. This one doesn't. Had a night out on the turps did we?

1. Councils will take their lead from state and Federal Governments.

2.” The battle” is not over until GA and recreational aviation is suppressed in the name of a sop to greenhouse gas emissions reduction, envy (those rich silver tails and their expensive toys) and property development. We are an easy (and convenient and attractive) target for the left wing socialists.

3. The Liberal party is stuffed.

4. I was the alcohol free designated driver last night.

Because the last 5 years has seen GA triumphantly return to sunlit uplands?

1. Only when it suits them. They got screwed when the Feds made them take over their airports and gave them a inadequate amount of money for maintenance that most of them spent on other things.
2.GA's contribution to greenhouse gases is insignificant. RPT traffic however is another thing and growing but there is no alternative for the near future.
3. Agree at the moment but as with Labour 5years ago the wheel goes around.
4. Good boy!

Whilst not wanting to add too much to the corrupt political circus that is the Australian system essentially we might as well take a shovel to GA & bury it once & for all!

Here is one council that is protecting the local unregistered airfield by a (draft) plan, released this week, that seeks to prohibit activities on nearby land use that could adversely affect flight safety.
The backstory is that some landowners were campaigning for airfield restrictions to combat noise and low flying and disturbance to livestock.

As a result, landowners now will have to apply for permits to conduct activities on their own land, that could be hazardous to flight!

I know this airfield well, it's committee are very active with the local council/community (not what you know but who you know applies here) There are a few squeaky doors in close prox to this airfield, these clowns are the ones that have been giving grief to the local aero club which I might add is caretaker of the airfield & does a lot for the council by way of raising funds etc for good causes.
This particular arrangement is not a good Eg of what's happening in GA n general with regards to council owned airfields & the gouging of dollars to keep it operational.

I spent many hours on an advisory panel run by John Anderson. He seemed pretty keen on privatising monopoly airports. Wasn't he a Nat?

The original idea to privatise the federal airports was Keating's. During the process where much force was applied to "relocate" Jandakot, Brendon Grylls (WA nats) was keen on the idea and a party member who had just lost an election ran a "consulting" business that was taken on (and worked out of the offices of Jandakot Airport Holdings who wanted to develop the whole site) to "persuade" the local yokels it was a good idea. This man, Colin Holt, became a Nats Minister in the Barnett government. I'll never forget the day Holt came into my office and told me that "The new owners (his words) of Jandakot were closing it down so I was going to have to move out" and the years of angst that followed which Albanese presided over and allowed them to do whatever they wanted. So they are all as bad as each other.

At least finish the projects before giving up and walking away. They were building a taxiway at Ballarat. They turned the dirt and that was it.

China has built dozens of Airports before we can even finish a taxiway.

Media speculation in the last 24 hours that Dick Smith is considering standing in what has been a safe Liberal seat.

# 14 ...Good quote re democracies.
We are nearly there. Just watch the Parliament 'Circus' on TV and note the behavior of most "parliamentals"..its subsidized theatre at a colossal cost to the taxpayer.
And the serious issues for citizens are not being dealt with. Its all about the electoral cycle and retention of power
Just Ike CAsA, the "safety" soviet that has lost the plot. Its turned into a grand scam, fcuk the 'customer/aviator.
We surely need a revolution of some kind...to clean out the swamp.

Small “l” liberals like me are totally despondent over the prospect of a Labor landslide next federal election. the abbot liberal party has been successfully branded as “homophobic, misogynistic, climate deniers and racist to boot.”

Shorten has already made it obvious that he is going to plunder our superannuation. That leaves older Australians totally fearful. We have no one to vote for.

Furthermore, CASA under Labor will redouble it’s effort to kill GA and recreational aviation in payback for the Forsyth review.

Labor are fiscal idiots and we don't know what's around the corner to be borrowing money to buy votes on wasteful government spending. What's Labor's problem with self-funded retirees? Is it just franking? Or do these goons have their eyes on a bigger slice of the pie.

I remember Gillard and Albanese pork barrelling a new oval near Jandakot, they contributed 10 million which was more than they had "sold" Jandakot for. The Cockburn, sorry, Fremantle Dockers were more important to them than the airport. It was all very nice for Fremantle but they still can't play AFL. Freo welcomes headline0 million federal government commitment to Cockburn Central West project - fremantlefc.com.au (http://www.fremantlefc.com.au/news/2013-06-13/freo-welcomes-10-million-federal-government-commitment-to-cockburn-central-west-project)

As for super, my balance is only single figures percentage points more than the contributions I have been forced to make over the last 25 years, it is a complete con, another one of Keating's bright ideas to have a pot of gold for them to rob in the future especially as the union membership has declined so much. All I can see is them transferring that pittance from my little pension pot into their disgustingly bloated one.

As for the other, do we really need another unrepresentative swill one trick pony in the Senate?

Despite the fact there are already more than enough "dicks" in parliament, good luck to Mr.Smith - I hope he does stand and is elected.

Kerry Packer was noted for his strong views on taxation and government.

'Only a banana republic changes the laws at the drop of a hat' - Print Media Inquiry, 1991. He had a great turn of phrase. We are headed for Banana Repub2, and a return to a Pacific Peso of US50c

I think we 'fat cats' in aviation need to look to our financial affairs, very, very diligently.

Sunfish, your point 2. above is what will happen - the Greens have made a point of the environmental aspects of leaded fuel and it is a matter of time before AVGAS disappears.
The Forsyth review ! I'd forgotten about that, and haven't heard it mentioned in years.

Wasn't it Latham or Beasley that was going to introduce a luxury tax on aviation? Wouldn't surprise me if they brought that in. 40% was the number IIRC.

As I was taught in economics, the history of Australian financial management is “a search for revenue” we are a big country with only a small population to fund its needs.

various pots have all been pillaged: excise, income tax, the GST, privatisation of public assets, user pays and so on. The remaining big pot of cash is superannuation.

’Expect: limitations on tax deductibility of contributions, “progressive” taxation of super drawdowns by retirees, taxation of “excessive” returns, non deductibility of franking credits (already threatened).

The policy will be sold by envy as usual - examples of mercedes driving multi millionaires etc. but the reality is that they will slug the man in the street as usual.

Goodness me Sunny!!! It sounds like you've been to a recent LNP think tank to discuss how "No Dough Sco Mo" can come up with some big bucks so he can say that for the first time in 6 years that his ideas free government will produce a budget that doesn't spend more than it's income. The sign held up by the school kid in Friday's protest was correct. It said "I'VE SEEN SMARTER CABINETS IN AN IKEA STORE"

I don't think it would bother too many on this forum. Who has ever bought a brand new aircraft? Luxury taxes don't apply to 2nd hand (or 23rd hand) goods.

Maybe Australia should return to the way it was envisioned with a reduction in the size and scope of federal politics, the states collecting tax for themselves and the states compete against each other for Business and Population.

The current system where states go cap in hand to Canberra doesn't work and will become life threatening to the country if it ends up with some massive Labor majority.
In reality Canberra should be cap in hand to the states for money, that will change the power dynamics and go some way to ending the current Canberra disfunction.

I'm not sure there is a difference between them. Isn't Bill Shorten married to the Governor Generals' daughter?

You don't get much more high bow / North shore Sydney than the QE II representative surely?

And like someone said above, I'm hardly worried about "luxury" taxes when everything I've operated on is decades old and 23rd hand!

Same with anything I am likely to buy, it will not qualify for any reasonable luxury tax of that I am sure.

It's elementary my dear Watson!

It probably does not matter which party holds power - small GA is rooted. Avgas will go, not because of the Greens, but simply because as the demand diminishes it won't be worth refining, or if someone does bother it will be 5 times the cost of jet fuel.
There is not enough votes in the entire industry to make any difference to the pollies, so all the lobbying in the world won't save it.
The only small GA segment likely to survive is the training industry, but that will have to be underwritten by the end consumers - ie airlines and wealthy individuals.
