Interesting article here examining the emergence of strategic threats from Russia and China. Thus leading to wishful thinking for the US Navy to have the F-14D again to combat the long range threat which the F/A-18E/F may not be able to handle.

the article doesn't say any of the things you say it does.

it days that the F-14 was a nightmare to operate, and apart from being really fast, and going a really long way - when you could get it off the ground - it was deficient in pretty much all areas of operations compared to the F/A-18.

the article actually says that what the USN would like is a way of achieving greater reach with the F/A-18 (Meteor anyone?), and that they want its next fighter to be a bit faster, and have longer legs than the F/A-18. i paraphrase, but they want something thats 90% Superhornet, and 10% Tomcat. not anything that 100% Tomcat.

Agree with cokecan, the range and speed (and nostlalgia) of the F-14 are missed. Who wouldn't want more speed and endurance? So those quoted want the Super Hornet replacement to be big, fast and have a bit of stealth- better start putting money in the piggy bank now...
