I remember that being tried before. A wg cdr eng (ex-HQ wallah) had a great idea, as soon as a jet became available (24/7) a crew should jump in and fly it. It was pointed out that this would achieve 100% down rate.
By not flying the aircraft we could achieve a 100% up rate.
QED, flying aircraft is bad for serviceability.

Apologies for what may seem like a dumb question, but with the current pilot crisis in the US Air Force in particular, what is the likelihood that this will be achieved within a year?

Simple fix. lower the operational requirements for a potential war goer, thus upping the servicability rate.. :oh:

I saw one proposal from a staff weenie in our HQ. He wanted to remove the term "not available for tasking" to " subject to an unscheduled unserviceability" :rolleyes:
Fortunately after an avalanche of ridicule he retreated back to his cubicle and was never heard from again
Is anyone actually sure what the metrics mean? Thinking back to a rather nice war plane that we got rid of 8 years ago:
Anything back with BAE for dev flights etc wasn’t Fully Mission Capable (FMC).
Nothing in Stand Alone Minor upgrade was.
Neither was anything having the new engine fitted (don’t think that was part of SAM).
Neither was anything in routine Depth maintenance.
Neither was anything being fixed by Forward.
Neither were OCU jets at a lower mod state.
Neither were the twin seaters.😉
Neither was anything that had just broken/ was carrying acceptable peacetime snags such as Mode 4 issues.
And that’s how you get from a total of about 74 on the planet, to about 48 in the forward Fleet, to about 36 on the frontline, to about 20 full spec jets, to about 16 that are actually working at that precise second - of which 8 are deployed...so depending on how you measure it (and this was a very reliable jet) it really is a case of ‘pick your percentage!’.

Or a very simple one - 8 AE/sqn - the rest don't count. Have a generation and assume overseas flights not declared AOG and Bob's yr uncle.
