Forgive me for posting here but getting very frustrated to find our the answer. Our son, a pilot with the RAF is on a secondment with the USAF. They are about to deploy overseas and has supplied me with APO number where he will be based. This is an extension of the US postal system for getting the mail from the USA to military outposts. Does anyone know if one can post mail from the UK using this arrangement? I thought it might work like for BFPO mail but if it isn't a shared base with UK forces it doesn't apply. Any ideas?

I sent some stuff many years ago and it was a case of either posting it normally and paying, or hand delivering it to a US base and putting it in the mail system there, strange as it may seem the parcel I posted cost me a fortune as it was a large heavy parcel and it first had to go to the USA before it entered their mail system, this was Gulf War one time period.

Bottom paragraph confirms this, you might get round it if there are UK forces cohabiting the base by sending to the BFPO address.

I don't know how practical it is if you are mailing regularly but some years ago I had need to use the APO system from the UK and the US Embassy in London took it and dispatched it. It arrived OK; as I say it was some while ago, "rules" may well be different now.

This is the link for contact details of the US Embassy in London. I am sure that they could put you onto somebody who knows the answer!

Admittedly a long time ago but American Express once kindly dealt with it for me. Not sure if their level of service has survived the decades.

If approaching the US Embassy, try the Air Attache.

If approaching the US Embassy carrying a large parcel expect to be challenged. I wouldn't make any sudden moves ;-)

Seriously though, check to see if there is a temporary BFPO no. for his detachment. His home squadron may be able to help as it won't be the first time the question has been asked.
