A Continually circling rumour about EK looking to take over [the Voldemort of the MEB3] being reported in several outlets: Bloomberg (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-09-20/emirates-said-to-be-exploring-etihad-deal-to-forge-no-1-airline) Telegraph (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2018/09/20/emirates-said-seek-etihad-takeover-create-worlds-largest-airline/)...
Obviously both airlines deny this, but realistically how bad would this combination be? aside from the billions invested in infrastructure, if they were combined it would allow for without a doubt the biggest airline and connections hub(s) in the world.

Going out of a limb here but if something like the Hyperloop were installed, a 10 minute ride could use both major airports as terminals. I would imagine the political side would get in the way more...

It is blinding obvious that a merger between EK and EY would make sense (it would have to be dressed up as a merger - local sensitivities would never permit a "takeover" of EY by EK). However, who knows whether it will happen.
