Qantas and NT Airports locked in stoush over airport charges - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) (http://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2018-09-04/qantas-fees-nt-airports-darwin-alice-springs-charges/10200132)

How very altruistic of Qantas. Their concern for customers back pockets, at times of record profits, is truly inspiring.

The refusal was made on the basis "it does not pay charges it does not agree to", the submission says.

I wonder how Qantas would react if pax took the same philosophy when paying for Qantas services. It’s not as if Qantas has ever been embroiled in a price-fixing scandal...

Geez not the first time QF has been locked into a ‘stoush....’ Canberra anyone?!?!

I love this part, This mindset of monopoly airports charging customers whatever they can get away with is why we need better regulation....

Isn’t that the exact same mindset of monopoly airlines??

But at the time Alice Springs chief executive Dave Batic disagreed, and said the airport charged less than $30 on average per person per flight and the rest of the airline ticket costs were Qantas charges.

As of Tuesday evening, the cheapest Qantas flight from Darwin to Sydney on September 8 is $422 one-way.The cheapest Jetstar flight for that route is $284 and the cheapest Virgin flight is $330.

$30 per person departure tax. Does Sydney levy a passenger arrival tax? Plus en-route navigation charges. Plus landing and parking charges? Plus GST being 9.09% of the fare.

Of course airport and other Government charges are a very significant part of a passenger air fare. The higher the charges, the higher the air fare.

Torres, most people on here don't have a clue about the financial side of running an airline. I'm pleased to see QF stand up against monopolies like this. Smaller carriers don't have the same clout and get the one fingered salute from airports and others. Townsville is very expensive too....

A few years ago, Qantas refused to allow Brisbane Airport Corporation to charge a levy on passengers in/out of BNE to pay for the future parallel runway. Joyce said that you can’t force people to pay for something that they are not benefiting from - I think that was the only time that I agreed with anything that bully said.

Joyce said that you can’t force people to pay for something that they are not benefiting from - I think that was the only time that I agreed with anything that bully said.

And yet he’s implemented a Policy whereby employees “pay” through their hard work toward a record profit but may not “benefit” (bonus payment) when it’s actually honoured

And in the end, Qantas did come to the party. So as usual, it was all p*ss and wind by Mr Joyce. I believe it was actually a request for QF to directly contribute to the costs by an increase in landing fees then, in preference to higher fees when the runway was finished. How QF chose to absorb or pass that on was up to them, if they chose to accept the deal.
you can’t force people to pay for something that they are not benefiting from
So that means QF can not put a dollar or two on a ticket, to save up to pay for new aircraft in the future? Yea right.

I'll have to remember to tell that to the bank next time they raise my home loan interest rates.

A few aircraft on the ground, a lien on them to pay back charges and the Airport closed to future movements until all bills paid and arangements to maintain payments made. That would lead to a quick rethink. That would shows what ransom is.

Maybe just keep every inbound Qantas aircraft in a holding pattern for 45 minutes before clearing them to land. And delay every takeoff for an hour...

Purely due to "operational" reasons, nothing to do with unpaid bills....

They do that anyway at Darwin..especially if the RAAF cadet controllers are studying holding patterns that week!

Tis a pity the Airport does not have anything to do with provision of ATC then, otherwise these might have been options.

entirely reasonable, need to make sure they are handled safely, if Qantas paid their bills, Darwin could afford experienced controllers, to process them quickly :)

Are Qantas not paying their bills? "Is Qantas not paying their bills?" would be correct

Re the BNE parallel runway levy, the issue was timing. Qantas and most others refused to pay because the runway hadn't been built.Would you rent a property that wasn't available?

Would you rent a property that wasn't available?
Is that a good analogy? Prepayment is a feature in lots of financing deals to get things built. An Off The Plan apartment usually requires a deposit & purchase commitment, enabling the builder to take a certain number pre sales to the bank get the actual construction financed, usually with some sort of discount or other advantage (no stamp duty). In return you get an IOU for an apartment where there is a currently a vacant block. Both sides can gain out of such arrangements.

Everything in the NT is more expensive. Darwin won't get the turnover or carpark revenue that larger airports do.

TBM-Legend

Is that a good analogy?

Yes it is as the airlines aren't buying a runway. They'll be "renting" by the landing!

I've rented a number of large commercial properties and gotten up to a three month "rent free" holiday on rents. Never paid to rent before is was able to be occupied after all as stated I'm not buying. If it flies, floats and is an airport, rent it!!

[QUOTE=TBM-Legend;10241705]"Is Qantas not paying their bills?" would be correct

In British english "are" and "is" are both correct when used in conjunction with a collective noun.

In the English language, as in so many things, Septic's are different...

Please go back to school....

"A commercial company is not a (plural) collective noun. It is a (singular) legal entity."
