Im looking for a free (ideally) resource which will show approx pax numbers between city pairs, at least capital or major routes

doesnt have to be pin point perfect, just a guide

any ideas?

alternatively any ideas in working out how I could figure this out?

As an overview try wikipedia - you could also try the links at the end but they mostly refer to paid sites

For routes to/from the US in detail try

For Australia try

Click on the year you want and look at Table 5

Various airports provide useful statistics but often only by country not airport. I'm afraid that you need a combination of google & elbow grease.

If anyone knows a free source giving a detailed list please let me know.
