Once again a great topical well edited read. But what a fantastic article written by one of our stalwarts. The Emperors new clothes is well researched, not laden with too much emotion and hard to ignore. The analogy drawn is that those of us at or near the front of the ship can see the icebergs and are ringing the ships bell, is their anyone listening? Full marks to RM for publishing.

you've hit the nail on smartly the head. When I left a couple of years ago I got the normal "leaving the sinking ship" speech. I confess, I was happy to don my life jacket and step smartly over the rail and now watch proceedings from the shore. I would have been happy to stay if the Captain had come up with a convincing plan to save the ship but, the idea of letting it sink to the bottom and then waiting for either the tide to go out or the crew to drag it to the beach really didn't hold much promise.:(

Hey, read the article and you will see that the ship is not sinking; we're just in the process of handing it in for one that floats with the rest and kicks arse. Of course there are tough decisions ahead and congrats to the auther who calls it the way it is...it's about time we recognised our strengths and moved on. Let's be the best operators first, do the job right and forget what the rest of the Military think; they have there own problems to worry about. ;)

I thought it was an excellent article - it really brought home the fact that it's a massive undertaking and there are some in the Corps who need to radically rethink their ideals of an AAC soldier. I hope we get it right. It's not all doom and gloom!!

A great article for sure.
Forty odd, it gives me absolutely no pleasure to type the words that I have. Though I am not a true blue, I love the Corps and feel that the greatest opportunity has been bestowed upon the AAC since the tank was given to the Cavalry.
The definition of a soldier is simply that he or she is a member of a professional Army. The only reason the AAC are among the list of teeth arms is because of the TOW misslie system, not the 9mm Browning or the SA80 in all it's guises! So is it about time that the commanders at all levels looked towards training its soldiers to be the best at what they should do rather than what they can do out of convenience! (it is easier to run a day at the rifle range than it is to organise a air combat tactics day).

Bob_Weight, I wonder where you are looking, go to EGUW and you will see that the last thing on most people's mind is aviation, it is more important to pass a BFT than it is to get a good 6 monthly. Go to any of the crew rooms, ask a basic question about min or max ranges of SAM's etc, you get will get a fine array of blank looks, I don't wish to sound disrespectful or belittling, just honest enough to see what is happening, not what I want to see.

The article is alright, but there is some better.

Take the one by the devilishly handsome, young pilot about his daring souree (I think) to the land of the Convict! A true masterpiece if ever there was!:D
