My proudest 'bag' is the DH Dragon Rapide.
When I was very young, we went to Blackpool, and my father and my two siblings went for a flight in a DH89.
My mother refused to go and refused to let her 'baby' go either.
Forward 65 years and I was at Duxford with my son - and they were giving rides in the 'aircraft that I never flew in'.
I bought two tickets without consulting my son - considering that he is a frequent flyer - however he was terrified throughout the trip - I have never asked why - maybe because it wasn't a proper airline? - or maybe because he was in next compartment to the bomb in the Kings Cross Underground at Russell Square on 7th July 2005 . . . (which left him physically unharmed but psychologically wounded)

However I achieved my ambition - after 65 years - of flying in 'the aircraft in which I had never flown'.

Probably an idea to clarify this a bit. I could list types from my logbooks when working, have another list of types from my gliding and private flying, another (very short) list from ATC air experience flights, and yet another list (which would be hopelessly inaccurate) from types where I've been a passenger as SLF (I've undoubtedly forgotten, or never noted, those).

So, do we just list types from work?

or do we include types from private flying or stuff like ATC air experience flying?

I'm not sure there's much point in trying to note types where one was SLF. How many people actually take much notice of what they happen to be riding in to get from one place to another?

Stick time on 44 types, P1 on 20 and innumerable passenger flights.

Some of the most exotic or memorable:
Dragon Rapide
Dominie - both kinds.
Queen's Flight Heron
Chipmunk
Tiger Moth
Bristol Britannia
Boeing 720
Boeing 747SP
Grumman Mallard (that's for you WingNut60)
Yak 40
Yak 42
Yak 52
Spitfire IXT
Vampire T.11
Beaver (turbo and round engine)
Twin Otter
Mil Mi-8
Aerospatiale Lama
Pilatus Porter
Augusta Bell 47G
Whirlwind 10
Varsity
Hercules
Standard Cirrus
Cirrus SR22

I've flown in almost all modern(ish) jets. Three I regret never having flown in are Concorde, VC-10 and BAC-111.
I realized a while ago, that of all the manufacturers, I have flown in DH products more than any other.

Well, my passenger list would include (amongst who knows how may Boeings and Airbuses and commuter aircraft) some propeller-driven airliner for a schools exchange in around 1970, a helicopter which I and a few colleagues chartered to wind up the boss arriving at a company piss-up, a mate's Mooney, several Beavers, 'cos we get a ride in one of those whenever we can find one (on floats of course) (pleased to see others have already listed Beavers), and Aurigny's Trislanders.

In my log book? A small number of Cessnas and Pipers (of which Super Cub, C206 and C172 on floats). That I've flown but didn't put in my log book due to lack of legality? - Beaver (on floats of course).

AS SLF, a varied selection - the most interesting was the Bell 47 out of Badak in East Kalimantan, pilot was a Sikh ex Wing Commander Indian Air Force with a Magnificent Handle Bar Moustache (OK he was a Sikh)
Did get a few moments hands on in a Whirlwind out of Dubai, pilot was ex RN (allegedly with record for ditching RN Whirlwinds (piston) in a day; he'd just bought a Hasslebad and was trying it out taking pics of Mantas etc and asked me to 'steady things'!!!)
Suppose from a UK point of view the rarest was the Martin 404 out of Freeport Bahamas to Fort Lauderdale
Biggest regret being too tight to book a Concord flight though I did nick a 'Luggage Label' from a BA office (in Orkney!!!)

Missed out TriStar, Embraer 120, 130 & 140 & Jetstream 31 and 41

Two types with a "600 lb special weapon box" sat by my left elbow for a couple of hundred hours or more of over-water trials flying. Does that count?

Oh, and one type for 50 hours or so with live "600 lb special weapons" loaded on the aft stations in the bomb bay (which, when doing trials armament loading line checks in the early hours at St Mawgan I wasn't allowed to turn around and look at, despite the nose of the damned things touching the back of my head as I was double checking the parachute lanyards and instrumentation connections on the trials torpedoes loaded on station 9).

Antonov?

Antonov AN2 - loggable
Aerostar (pre Piper)- not loggable
Flight Design CTSW - not loggable
Skyranger - not loggable
Schweizer 2-33 - loggable
and more usual stuff both powered and glider.

First as SLF was a Vickers Viscount from Wick to Glasgow via Inverness in crystal clear air. Second was Glasgow to Birmingham the same day in BAC 111 in increasingly bad rain and turbulence. I was used to being thrown around while navigating a rally car by then, but did not think that commercial aircraft could fly like that.

Hence memory recall. My remembering the BN Islander a single Logair flight was the last I added. Quite interesting experience and memorable in its own way, once I remembered.

Miss PN can also recall some memorable ones, a Jetstream, a rusty Crusty, and one from Khandahar where her companion was an explosives dog going to Cyprus for R&R. It spent the whole time with its head on her lap.

Hell man, I can remember flying the Atlantic with propellers, via Gander to Shannon and into London and then back the other way. Then I discovered that you could go by ocean liner, you know, not the hapless cruise barges of toady but real ships, ones built for the Atlantic crossing in the middle of winter.

I have flown as passenger in most of the above listed aircraft, plus a couple not listed so far:
Argosy from Aden to Francistown, a company King Air and Learjet while working in Saudi Arabia. (Owned by Lockheed). Until now, I have never tried the A380 or the 787. Here's hoping!
Most memorable: Whistling Tit from Aden to Francistown and the Manston based DC4 sent to bring us back from Francistown to Aden. Both were flying sheds!
Most scary: an ex Pan Am DC3 from Caticlan to Manila and the T21 at Leeming when the winch cable snapped at 400' on my second launch.
Smoothest: British Midland Viscount from Heathrow to Liverpool. Despite having my face glued to the patio window, I only realised we had landed when I noticed the tarmac and grass were not getting bigger!

My proudest 'bag' is the DH Dragon Rapide.

Elsewhere recently I saw the question "What did you save your pocket money for?" In my case in 1957 I saved up ten bob for a flight in a Dragon Rapide at Prestwick. Ten minute flight (a long circuit) but I was like a dog with two tails and from then on all I wanted to do was fly. Eyesight let me down in the RAF and I had to make do with being a nav, but I did do a PPL aged 60 and my eyesight certainly hadn't improved!

Had a trip to Newquay with the family a few years back and there was a Dragon Rapide there doing pleasure flights. This time it was £75 not ten bob, and even allowing for inflation I reckoned that was a bit steep, so I gave it a miss!

It is the early flights that stick in the memory:

Ambassador, Caravelle, Viscount, Vanguard. HS748 on a charter from Teesside to Morlaix. Dan-Air Comet. CrabAir VC10 Brize to Sydney. BCal 707 Gatwick to Singapore which I think was one of those 'bent' charters, the smell of over a hundred people using Tiger Balm Oil for popping ears will stay forever in the nostrils. Surely nobody keeps records of all the different types they've flown in as pax? Some do, as a spotty teenager I kept a school exercise book as my logbook, detailing crew, route, time and comments. Once when flying the line a similar book was passed to me in the cockpit with an adult, very much travelled pax, requesting I fill it out with similar details. In fact it was quite interesting flipping through it and seeing names I knew of folks from long ago, who they were flying for, and what they were flying.

That's nothing compared to some of the, ahem, rail" enthusiasts" .....carriage number, seat number, fwd, aft or sidewards seat, year of manufacture, operated routes, journey times and that's before they get to the locomotive details.......as witnessed and overheard very recently in fact.

However, patience is a virtue and now we have the perfect thread related opportunity for the revelation of some 42 types to be clarified.....or so we may think, because, the two posts so far on the subject have been remarkably devoid of this information but, not unsurprisingly, have offered complexity in response to a simple question plus the essential personal involvement . But, as we now know the log books are available, then it can only be a simplistic exercise to extract the information, and capacity ( hours would be a bonus of course ) to print on here.

As a lead in, a sort of "starter for ten " if you like, a list of the gliding types ( I pulled the cable release knob and operated the air brakes aside ) and the standard achieved would be of interest..

Flight Testing, may, of course, be covered by the Official Secrets Act.

Out of necessity, most commercial types, props and jets since '69. Flying around China in the early 90'ies I had the "pleasure" of being SLF on IL86, some tri-motor Yak, Tu154 and a propeller thing with a glassy nose. Happy days.

Aye Tash - also known as the Jetbox in the UK I believe?
It were back in the days when it was me job to make a fool of meself on the telly... instead of now just generally making a fool of meself.
That particular old B206 actually was scary.
Lots of inoperable stuff on the panel as we flew to a news job... I didn't have a good feeling about the pilot, who was very casual.
A few months later he took himself out - crashed in a pine forest.

I have never forgotten the thrill of my first flight, it was in a Chipmunk flown by a Flt Sgt. After some 60 years it remains my best flight ever. After that nothing to speak of really, plenty of civ and trooping, pretty boring although the Comet Singapore - UK and back was a revelation after UK - Singapore by Britannia. I do regret not taking up the offer of a trip in the T4 on my final Harrier field deployment.
Lady SB beats me hands down: Shackleton, Hastings, Argosy and a 1574Flt Meteor.

Going through the lists here reminded me of a few more. There were quite a few passenger flights in the seventies or eighties I can't remember the aircraft at all. Sacrilege!

I then remember where and when I flew each and could bore for England, but I won't any more than I have already. I guess you could have associated threads in the nostalgia thread - military bases visited, aircraft navigated (single seat pilots on a winner here) etc.

Well, I have flown a lot of types, only including LHS or command seat (no RHS or SLF included) it is about 210 types - in reality somewhat more but I can't find my post 1988 log books.
As far as ratings, this rating on my ATPL helped: "Any aeroplane during the conduct of performance test flights duties authorised by ......"
But, in reality I was never an "enthusiast" this stuff just sort of happened after joining the RAAF at age 18 - like lots of things in life.

I hesitate to join in here, but it is Jet Blast, and this topic triggered an interesting exercise in recalling the different aircraft I've been fortunate to experience over 60+ years. I won't list them - there's nothing very special. I came up with 20 different glider types - all of which I flew - some for many hours and kilometres. As passenger on commercial flights, and also with friends who generously offered me a flight or two, I came up with somewhere around 30+ different powered types - just a few of which I was granted freedom at the controls for a while. The last figure includes 2 trips in rotary wings - both memorable for different reasons.

Life has been good. One hundred years earlier, the magic of flight remained something of a dream for the average person. One hundred years into the future? Who can say; but I was on this earth at a time when all of this was possible, and I've been so very privileged to be part of it - even in a small way.

This is just so intelligent and educational... this has to be the most informative, inspirational display of knowledge ever on Pprune. People fly on different types of aircraft... who knew?

You know, if a thread doesn't interest you, you can scroll past....

Or you can show yourself to be a dick and comment in the manner you have.

I'm tempted to join the willy-waving contest. At the last count a few years ago, I had over 90 distinct glider types, and just under 40 power types in which I had been pilot handling during at least one take off and landing. I didn't keep any record of how many assorted DeHavilland, Douglas, Lockheed, Boeing, Airbus etc. types, plus other light aircraft where I have been a passenger, although they include a trip on a single pilot operated charter C46 (Curtis Commando) on which I was welcomed into the right hand seat to hold the throttles open during the take off roll, and allowed to hand fly down the West coast of Malaysia at 1.500 ft for an hour, and also a memorable hour in a Lightning T4 (also with a little handling permitted)..

Huge number of TU-154's (at least 500 flights maybe more) 1998 - up until around 2010, variety of CIS/Russian carriers usually "M" a very few were B-2 however, once a Russian Government transport ("M").

TU-134 (50 odd times) mostly to and from Kaliningrad from Moscow some years back, hated how cramped they were (the Windows are deceptive).

The odd AN-24 (within Uzbekistan usually Tashkent-Samarkand)

IL-96 (twice).

BAe-146 during my Canada days quite a bit.

And the usual Boeing stuff. Nowadays usually 737's (CL/NG) with the odd 757/767.
I have never been on an Airbus in my life (except the Sim), not through conscious avoidance, can't think of a particular reason though, it does seem odd now I think of it.

Likely because most Russian carriers favour Boeing heavily, or at least used to perhaps.

Even after I'd got my PPL being SLF in that thing used to scare the **** out of me.
Not enough wing - and it just seemed too fast for itself - an accident waiting to happen.
Maybe it was the tiny cabin.
Even as SLF it was good on the smaller types to be able to lean out into the aisle and see parts of the instrument panel between the pilots.
And watch through the windshield as many a sky-god overshot the extended centreline when turning from base onto finals, particularly on a really windy day at WLG.
Apologies for annoyance caused - willy now back in trousers.

How sad for the poor old Beverley.

I shared a room with a Beverley captain at Seletar and often went flying with him. Great fun watching one ton containers getting shoved out the back over the jungle. In my memory the pilots' seats seemed like comfy chairs, and I remember the nose wheel steering which was pulled up out of the floor and operated like a tiller.

ah Yes AM -
in my list at the very start of this thread I was racking my brains for any other types I had flown on and you reminded me of going on an air kenya? or was it Precision air Let 410 from MBA to Zanzibar about 14-15 years ago - there had been a few crashed of this type around then so I was not too keen but it was OK....I returned direct to NBO on a kenya AW Saab 340 equally nasty lol but had the most amazing views of Mt Kilimanjaro on the way in

Wow, what a willie waving event, good thing this is the Professional Pilot’ Rumour Network, as we are clearly all ‘proper’pilots, so.....

PIC

107 FW

6 RW

7 unpowered

9 micro/LSA

7 para static line

1 delayed opening

2 emergency para, both delayed opening due Prox

4 stabilisation para deployment,
Two worked, for other two, see above... phew......

AND, I fly on commercial (airliners) A LOT, LOTS AND LOTS..... many, but I just sit and drink fizzy wine chat with the hosties ( auto correct changed Hosties, to Hotties, ha ha ha,, haD to change it back, cos QANTAS quite a lot, lovely girls, but weeell, anyway) often with a flight crew that I trained, or soloed a long time ago. But!! That doe#nt really count an$ I made a decision in my teens that pax was BS, supernumerary counted (hence the entomology of the word), but paxing was for spotters.

paxed on MIL often enough also, but it is no5hing like actually driving the crate, which is on the PIC list, as applicable.

i have also SEEN, heaps and heaps of planes, and talked to the people, usually VERY rich people, that own them. It’s nice but unless I get to fly it, ho hum. And on occasions they gave me a few laps, out of pity clearly.

so ..... pax list pfsttt doesn’t count cos you are a punter, driver time is good, trigger good, old heaven metal great but, jaysus, ya gotta work for it these days.....

Never been in or on a balloon, thank fcuk, oh yeah, also a Rogallo self launched hang glider, still got those scars also.

have friends and colleagues that are ‘Astro’ qual, but I’ve only flown the sim, so no credits there.

PIC Flight time hands on, no AFCS, single Pilot in 5 figures, no first second, or even 3rd officers, or George time, all approaches hand flown, alone. I have personally hand flown about 30,000 approaches and landings, or more.
Am short by 4 landings to takeoffs, rode two in two were, plan B.

SLF is a wnak, get real, I been on lots of trains, in many countries, but I don’t post on the Prof Train Drivers Network, if the have one, which they prolly do, and claim credit for sitting upstairs in an AMTRAK cafe car, sipping rat’s p!ss Bud light, as train driver experience. Helloooooo.....

if if you gonna stand tall and straight in the bright light Of day in this forum, expect incoming, accurate incoming.

makes me think that all that other stuff that SLF post on here, with great authority, is also all just BS and dog whistling 😙

some laps in a 150, or a Grumman tiger, 20 years ago followed by 20 or 30 commercial trip down the back don’t cut it.

Now or where is that Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, all gone you say, how is that possible?

As a slight thread drift on aircraft not flown on, shortly after (a couple of months) the present Mrs NC and I got together, Mrs NC who then was responsible for a lot of corporate travel bookings for her employer was asked by her travel agent (no on-line booking in the 1980's) to go on a jolly to London for a couple of days. Said jolly included a Concord experience flight from Heathrow. The present Mrs NC declined as she didn't want to leave me for a couple of days. Mrs NC now regrets that decision.

Purely coincidentally we visited Fort Paull near Hull a couple of days ago to see Beverley XB259 which they have on display.

What an amazing survivor :) - flown into Paull Airfield on retirement, dismantled and moved to the Pongo Transport Museum at Beverley and then some years later - dismantled again (no easy task even just owing to component size) and transported to Fort Paull,Hull.
She looks to be in fairly reasonable shape for having been on outdoor display for the last 44 years and thus far seems to have led a charmed life, let us hope she survives long into the future.

TBH I have not kept records of types flown when SLF, but I guess it would be around 25 or so. Nerdily, I would deliberately seek out slower prop-types, given a choice.. So DC3, Britannia, Herald, Viscount, Ambassador, F27, Islander, Trislander and, one I cannot see already mentioned, the Nord 262 (DanAir). All increasingly difficult to find these days, if not wholly withdrawn. Types flown P1 probably number about 20 (SEP and MEP) and all have been mentioned previously already, so no rarities. Minor regrets that I never flew in the Jetstream or Heron. Beautiful aircraft !

tartare,

My flights in a Yak-40 and Yak-42 were in consecutive years, immediately after the breakup of the USSR.
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.gmforum.com-vbulletin/640x426/kapo_yakovlev_yak_40_ryabtsev_adad7c71e67b8ea8af391abd28f0f2 3ac7d734e7.jpg

My first flight in the Yak-40 was from Usinsk to Ukhta in the Komi Republic in Arctic Russia, after arriving in Usinsk in a Canadian 727. I was part of a group going to visit a Canadian-British-Russian Oil Joint Venture. I remember being somewhat taken aback on arrival at Ukhta when the first time I saw the ground was over the threshold! There was no ILS so I assume we did a GCA.

At the end of our two-week trip, we were ferried to Moscow in another Yak-40, but this was a VIP version with plush seats, some couches and a fake wood interior. It was the personal aircraft of the chairman of the JV's Russian partner. One of our group had a NatGeo map of the USSR. The pilots were intrigued and asked to see it. They told us, through our translator, that they had never seen a map like this!

The following year, on a visit to another oil company, we flew from Moscow to Saratov on the Volga River, in an Aeroflot Yak-42 ( a Tridentski?).
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.gmforum.com-vbulletin/640x426/aeroflot_yakovlev_yak_42_volpati_fc89a6685c9d9cfe53a3de834ae e0108ec47a08a.jpg

I was quite taken aback when most of the passengers carried all their luggage on board. Suitcases were stacked in the aisles!

Our return journey was quite unpleasant. My seat mate was a large man, stinking of Vodka, who kept falling asleep, with his head on my shoulder. I kept pushing him off, to avoid him slobbering on me!

During our stay in Saratov, we were ferried by an Aeroflot Mi-18 to visit an oilfield.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.gmforum.com-vbulletin/640x423/screen_shot_2018_08_15_at_20_56_31_65880aec37d1ec08a9765a3da bc31851f3dc416c.png

Two things about this flight stick in my memory. One was how we were nearly blown over by the downwash as it came in to land to pick us up - 13 tonnes maximum AUW. The second was sitting sideways in foldable seats, looking at each other, across a large auxiliary fuel tank in the centre of the cabin!

What a great thread and havent some people ahd the most fantastic experiences, very mean spirited I think for peopel to characterise it as boasting.

I have flown almost exclusively airline types and pretty much every mark or Airbus?minibus 737 and DC9/MD80 plus DC8s and tridents. Nothign very exceptional really -maybe the rarerest would be Standard Vc10 and its Russian Equivalent (well more like a Super I know) IL -62, maye an F28 isnt that common either. A bit better when it comes to varients maybe DC9-20 I think which was only made for SAS and had the original short body but the -30 wings . Amusing to see these little birds at Arlanda alongside an MD80 , the ultimate stretch. SAS liked a bit of exclsuivity since i think they were the only original owners of DC9-40s whch were semi stretched 30s. rarer but relatively common back in the day 707-400s DC8 40s and DC8 62s

The IL62 was CSA from LHR to Prague and was a very cool flight, nice spacious airplane , terrific performance on a short trip and fantastic spool up noise as we started the take off run. Excellent in flight service too starting with a large glass of Czech bear to acquaint the westerners and restore expat Czechs faith in the brewing industry. This was back in the communist days of course but Prague was still a fantastic place to visit, in some ways better than today now it is over run with tourists.

If one was starting out on this list today or any time in the last 5 years It would be alot shorter whn it came to airline types and likely to remain a lot shorter as there is little diversity at all now and at places like Stamnstead you could probably go all day seeing dozens of aircraft but only three or four airliner types

Interested to hear how that happened - domestic travel within the USSR or post Soviet Russia?
Anyone flown as pax/observer on any Russian military kit?
My experience with Russian aircrafts comes from extensive domestic travel in China 1991 to 96. I flew Xinjiang Airlines Il-86 Beijing-Urumchi/return. Interesting aircraft, enetered via airstairs at the bottom, room for luggage in the basement and up some stairs to the cabin. The seatbacks in front of you were fitted with fans which you could turn on at your convenience.
For the remaining types/trips I would have to dig out my collection of boarding cards, too lazy I'm afraid.

Hi Rogerg

Kranich is in my list at number 3 in the 2 seat glider list. First time in November 1963 at Bicester, most recently 2 years ago. And the Goevier is on my list as the Go-4 (Goppingen vier). I remember it as being a very cosy cockpit - not sure i could fit in one now unless the other person was very slim.

The Canguro - you have got me there, but I realised although I had never flown an M-200, I had omitted the M-100S from my single seater list, so add 1 more :) I also missed off the EoN Primary, on which I have had one bungee launch, 1 winch launch and 1 aerotow - and have no wish to have any more. A late thought, I had also missed Dan Delap's Weihe, in which I had a few happy hours in 1967. Being in the RAFGSA at the time helped collect a few types, although there were rareties I missed (such as the Rheinland) not being in the right place at the right time.

Aha I had forgotten that it was a Goppingen design :),yes it was quite cosy, but not too bad a glider design - especially considering the year it was originally designed.Luckily the guy I was flying with was very slim and so was I in those days,my year working in zimbabwe had taken me from 15 stone down to 11 stone - which was a nice weight for most gliders.
Anyway congrats on your impressive list of gliders flown :)

The Antonov AN2 was operating sight-seeing trips in Hungary after Hungarian independence but before full breakup of USSR. With no other punters in sight at lunchtime on a very hot day I was offered a special deal for all six seats which I said I'd accept if I got some stick time. After discussion of the types I had flown a deal was struck. Not that an AN2 is much of a glider but I did know how to pronounce Puchacz which I think fixed it.

Astounding fact; there has been only one occurrence of the faithful Station Flight Avro 'Annie' Anson.
On my list as the very first time I left terra firma, as a 13 year young very new ATC cadet at Colerne. 30 minutes in the right hand seat, tour of Wiltshire and down to the Bristol Channel. It's funny how you remember every minute of some flights.

Found this an interesting read, despite one or two naysayers (miserable spoil sports).....!!

My list, entirely as SLF covers some 70 odd types mostly the "usual suspects".
My first flight(s) was in a Vickers Viking (don't think it has had a mention yet).
November 1952 out of Blackbushe, two and half days to Nairobi. Although I was
only seven at the time I remember loads of details. A memorable trip. It took
place only 20 years after the African route was opened up by Imperial Airways.
I do feel some affinity to the "pioneers" as we only few in daylight (two stops, Malta
and Khartoum) and the a/c was unpressurised so we did not fly much above 8000 -
10000 ft. A further 30 years on in 1983 covered the same route in about 8 hours,
BA 747 direct Heathrow to NBI. Progress....!!!

Possibly my most unusual type is a New Standard D29. Not too difficult to achieve,
at the time about $ 30.00 out of Old Rhinebeck.

Always looking for opportunities to fly in different type both commercial airline and
GA types. Last year I added Dornier 328 Jet to the list. Manchester to Billund.
Great flight, great experience, great cabin service. LoCo is was not!! while
in Denmark achieved another first, first flight in a gyrocopter.

Down in Cornwall this September, wondering if I can add Islander and DHC-6
to my list !!! Missed out on the S-61s.......!!

A "spotting" pal of mine at Eastleigh (Southampton) in 1963 probably
achieved a most unusual flight: a five minute circuit in the prone pilot
position in the R&S Desford G-AGOS. That flight could, of course, now
be repeated. Not sure how the front part is currently set up.

Damn! I forgot my second ever flight was in the old Anson. I also forgot several flights in the Avro 748 (Danair). I wish I could remember the name of the glider I went up in in Colorado. It achieved one of my dreams, as we soared to over 16000' over the Rockies. And just remembered a couple of trips in the Twin Otter, one Danair and the other, a beautiful low level dusk trip from Reading Pa to Newark.

I’ve had three trips on a Dreamliner in the last two years. I definitely feel less tired and recover more quickly after flying in one.

It’s now my new favourite, having supplanted the late-lamented L1011.

Later, getting on a 320 for a Euro flight, she said that it was not a real plane as it didn't have an upstairs.

In the early 80s, we travelled from Jakarta to Singapore in a Cathay 747 and then boarded a MAS 737. My four year old son, who by this time had travelled around the world three times, said “Dad, where’s the spiral staircase?”

1% of responses are actually answering your question. My question is why do you want to know the number of aircraft? Why not ask the number of flights or the number of different types of aircraft? Why the number of aircraft? What do you hope to glean by your question, other than concluding that people generally answer their own question and disregard your original question?

My answer to your question is approximately 185.

Given that the OP answered the original question by listing aircraft types (rather than the number of aluminium tubes s/he has actually sat in) I think it's safe to assume that s/he wanted the number of types. Unless, of course, you are suggesting that the OP has only flown once on each individual type listed (possible, I grant you, but unlikely).

Just to be reprehensible: these lists are the equivalent of saying I sat on this train or bus. I accept that if one actually piloted an aircraft that would have some kudos, but to list the different cars, buses, trains, trams, taxis, (and for the dinosaurs out there), planes one had travelled in as a passenger seems somewhat precious and, to be honest, rather naff.

Vickers Vicount when I was six years old was my first flight. DC-6 on the way back home. Then I decided that I wanted to be a pilot. I was more impressed with the Vicount. Those big windows. 54 years ago. I have flown all of the Boeings except the 777 and 787. And the DC-8.
I am not sure which I love more, the DC-8 or the 747. As a passenger I have lost the count.

I have flown in never more than one at a time, on numerous occasions.

About a year ago I took my first flight in a CS300, now the A220. A dozen days after that, I took my second flight in a CS300. I believe I flew POSH, or perhaps it was the opposite. Either way, it was a scheduled airline flight, I was a passenger, I was given a sandwich and beverage, my seat was reasonably comfortable, the temperature and humidity were within specified limits. As far as it being an accomplishment, I can state categorically that I bought my ticket and found my way to the appropriate gate on time. I doubt that's going to win me the Harmon Trophy, however.

HQ, spoil sport. Perhaps better in history and nostalgia, it was a good brain exercise and brought memories back of some memorable flights.

Three Egyptair flights in May 1973 were particularly memorable. One, our luggage followed by a separate flight. The airfield was a military one as the civil air port was closed. Fascinating seeing all the Soviet kit burning and turning, ADA pits all fully manned.

The next where we all trooped out to the aircraft. They counted the pax stopped us with an arm in the middle of a family. Like a bus, the aircraft was now full. They relented and let the others through.

Finally, on taxiing out, the aircraft accelerated, nose wheel unstuck, and then reverse pitch was selected before the pilot made a tight high-speed turn on to the runway and off.

I am sure these types of memories were rekindled by many.

Surely nobody keeps records of all the different types they've flown in as pax? As a tyke I used to, and wish now that I had kept up the practice. Once had a passenger pass a notebook to the cockpit with the request to fill it out, a logbook for all intense purposes. It was interesting to leaf through it and find some long previously known identities and what they were now doing eg ex instructor I had who was 20 YO at the time I knew him now left seat in a 744.

Not my claim to fame, but a much-loved aviator who many of us now involved in aviation were inspired by was Ray Roberts (Ex RAF and ATA) when he was a civilian gliding instructor at 618 VGS at West Malling in the 70's and 80's. . At his funeral wake in Kent (he was 101) his daughter produced his log books (5) and here is his impressive list:

You have three times what I have! (And I suspect probably the same way?) However, it's a credit balance that I have been very pleased about for decades and I intend to keep it that way!

Rather than my list, here's my father's more interesting list, from his RAF logbook, in order of first appearance as P1. He did his ab initio training with a civilian FTS, as did many RAF pilots in 1937

DH 82
Hart-T
Audax
Heyford
DH Dragon (DH 84?)
DH84 Dragon Rapide
DH89 Dragon Rapide
Wellington (Incl raid on Brunsbuttel 4th Sept 1939)

Oxford
Hornet Moth (noted as "Service aircraft", LFP at Filton.)
Fury
Harvard
Gauntlet

Botha (March 1940, Brize Norton)

Lysander
Defiant
Blenheim
Junkers 52 (Rhodesia Sep 1942)
Wellington III
Lancaster III (1st conversion flight 10 August 1943, 5 operations to Germany from 22 Sept - 2nd October, shot down on 5th, near Munich)
Chipmunk (postwar)

It strikes me that they gave aircraft much nicer names in those days. It is also quite noticeable that once he was on a squadron, his first flights in several types were as P1 with no P2 or passenger, ie read the manual, climb in, start up and go.

I had a count up and since 1962, when I first flew in a BEA Dart Herald, I have flown in 68 types and piloted 9, all gliders. I have flown in single, twin, tri and four jets and props, single and twin rotor helicopters and an airship.

I just had a count up, since my first flight in 1966 in a Channel A/W Viscount to last month in a CAP 10 I've flown in 108 different types. If you include sub types (B737-200, B737-300 etc) it comes to 126.

Kept a passenger log - my dad's logbook provided most of my pre-teen info, probably a few gaps tho where he was a passenger too, lost my Junior Jet Club log but I know when, who and what those five flights were, can guess the hours!). Most interesting types, Chippy, Pup, Cv440, Waco UPF-7, Stinson SM-8, Bell 47, DC-3, S-61N, floatplane J-3, Citabria, Rapide. Think there are just over 30 types all told.

An interesting list King 6024.
Your Glasgow-Heathrow shuttle would most likely have been a Trident 1C or 3B or possibly a Boeing 757-236.
The jet sectors ex Dublin would most likely have been either a BAC One Eleven 200 or Boeing 737-200 I guess.

I whish I had been more diligent in recording the registrations of types I "paxed" in. However I do know that a couple of them are now in preservation.

First flight in Mooney 201.

We were supposed to fly a Cessna 152, but somehow someone else booked it, so the Mooney was the only “trainer” plane available.

Turn right, turn left, up, down, all while zipping along at high speed. :-)

Beech E-18 at a drop zone where some friends were skydiving. I was more comfortable staying in the plane as an observer, but the pilot let me fly it for a while before we landed.

My hours are split about 50:50 between Pipers and Cessnas.
Usual list for a private pilot:
Piper Tomahawk
Piper Warrior
Cessn 140
Cessna150
Cessna 152
Cessna 172

Beech Bonanza, Again, a friend gave me the controls of the plane, but not enough to log.

As SLF it's been fun reading this and made me compile my own list - which isn't worth posting at about 25 types so far.
I expect a few more might occur to me. There's some "don't-knows" - flying from Bratislava to Prague in '97, I remember it was probably an Antonov - any ideas?
Lots of DC-3 mentioned but I (in my mid-fifties) *might* be the youngest person here to take a scheduled flight in one rather than a "jolly". The one I remember involved a desert-strip landing where we all had to disembark whilst hand-pumped refueling took place. I threw a spectacular strop and was allowed back (accompanied by cabin crew) to retrieve my teddy. Of course, being a devious toddler, I just wanted to get back on the plane and be the only passenger allowed to break the rules. Worth it - don't think I have been in a silent and empty airliner since.
[I think I've mentioned this before but the search tool can't find it - so apologies for repetition, if so.]

Aaaaaah. Feel a bit more worthy. Just noticed the opener asked about aircraft "flown in" rather than "flown". Up their with you heavyweights and can offer a long list . First was a KLM DC4. I was 5. Walking out to the aircraft, I noticed a long metal tube thingy was stuck on the underside of the tail and looked as though it was there to stop the tail falling to the ground.

The last was a Eazy 73, in and out of Gatters for the Air Europe re-union. L o n g list in between.

I have not flown in an F16, but am owed a flight in one. Some 20 years ago I flew a young man to his entry-session in the DK air force, and while enroute, I distinctly remember us firmly agreeing, that if he got in and got to fly F16s, he'd give me a tour ! Probably not going to happen, although I remind the family every time I run into one of them...

Just to update my previous post - who would have thought that within 1 month of that post I would do 56 mins in a Schweizer 2-32 on a 'Mile High' flight at Boulder,CO (with a little weak thermalling thrown in) and by the end of the year I was back in the game.
The 2-32 was an interesting warbird survivor - it had been converted to a Lockheed QT-2 high altitude quiet reconnaissance a/c and had been reconverted back to glider config - still with a Lockheed logo on the fin.

So can add to my list of P1 types

SZD 'Junior'
DG200 (half share)
I also had a one fifteenth share in a 1962 K8 (now that was cheap flying :) )
Within 1 year I had finished off my Gold Badge with a climb to 11,500' near Loch Leven :)
Unfortunately I had to quit flying last year due to too many red line entries on my medical card :(.

plus as P2
DG505
Perkoz

Also how could I have forgotten the Harvard from my original list ?
Back seat out of Boscombe with a few touch and goes at Middle Wallop - what a lovely a/c to fly :)

How many aircraft have you flown in (https://www.pprune.org/aviation-history-nostalgia/612110-how-many-aircraft-have-you-flown-your-life-time.html)
More accurately it should read ""How many DIFFERENT aircraft types have you flown in...?? Pedantic, I know...!! 😀😀
