Just saw this Norway has ordered 5 to go with the U.K. order of 9 (so far), I can understand trying to keep a single type in one place to have better matinence/logistical support but to be based in a foreign country? Is this normal practice ?

Shared costs and facilities makes sense as does shared experience, operating procedures etc. Remember TTTE.

The Norwegian P-8s aren’t going to be based at LM, just have deep maintenance done there. There home base will be Evenes.

Shame the article says ours have been ordered for the Royal Navy!

Shame the article says ours have been ordered for the Royal Navy!

I think the P-8’s have been ordered to protect the assets of the Royal Navy , it’s just the RAF who operates them.

lets not let inter service rivalry get in the way of the fact that all three services work for the Queen.

For sure there will Flag folk here and there on sonme patrol flights to get the feel of how Poseidon integrates works with Portsmout/Plymouth/Faslane's finest. Or there could conceivably an exchange posting for an Pinger Observer....however was there ever a Pinger went on exchange to serve on the Nimrod Fleet in the past?

cheers

In my happy days in Coastal Command in the 50s and 60,s we were operationally run by the Royal Navy through joint Maritime Headquarters in U.K., Malta and Singapore. Never a problem, and we enjoyed working together. Our annual detachments to JASS in Londonderry and Luna were looked forward to. Don’t forget Coastal Captains were advised, not ordered, and we were given a great deal. Of latitude on carrying out our operational duties, especially when shadowing and looking for our Soviet “friends”. I hope that the Poseidon is as crew friendly as were our Neptune’s, Shacks and Nimrods. Good luck to my old Squadron, soon to start again.

Not only Observers but also Aco operators from the RN flew on exchange with the Nimrod force. We also sent Nav's to the RN to fly with the them.

Scotland is a bit away from the Russian actinon.
It is bad enough that we have decided to close Andøya Airbase were the P3 Orion is based.
With Evenes this gives a good 30 minutes longer flight for a northbound search.
The training ( Sim), operational training ,spareparts, and medium and heavy maintenance would be best served together.

At Stavanger Sola.

Scotland is a bit away from the Russian actinon.

To be fair, there's probably more of the Northern Fleet sub force lurking under the Minch than the Kola Inlet, so Lossie is quiet well placed! And ditto a Backfire Regt above it too.

If only there was another large airfield in the same area that could have been used as a relief landing ground/supplementary field

Limited facilities for detachments - not based - as stated in the article.

Change out of £60M after paying for extra pan space wouldn’t pay for the bowling alley....

There's plenty space at a decent-sized airfield near Lossie, now rather quiet since the Nimrods and the incumbent VGS were flung on the scrapheap, now host only to a couple of Cessnas and a few Pongos.

Might not need to spend 60 million quid either.

Too common sense of course for the Ministry Of Dunces.

Has anyone told wee Krankie the Yankees are coming? Lossie could be following Faslane into SBA status in a foreign land.

TelsBoy. I’m afraid you are showing a lack of understanding about P-8A operations.

The Wee Krankie's got other matters causing a distraction at present, the allegations being made against Fred Flintstone for one!
