Using Foreflight as an Australian Pilot

Good day Aviators,
I am in the market for an EFB and have played with trials on several different apps. I love the idea of having a digital logbook and the integrated one within foreflight looks mint!
I’m currently working on my RPL so I am not really in a position to best judge the capabilities or my future requirements for an EFB but would like to try and make foreflight work. I’m not inclined to judge their suitability in Aus based off their marketing alone. However I can’t seem to find any real world reviews from Australian Pilots.

So has anyone in Australia or NZ subscribed with their Jeppesen charts? How are you finding it? Are you able to utilise all of the features you want from an EFB? Does the planning and mapping features compare to their Australian counterparts Ozrunways and Avplan? Would you stay with foreflight if you you could make your choice again? Any tips or tricks I should know before flicking them my scarce financials?

I’m a OzRunways guy so can’t help much, but seeing as this is PPRune I politely suggest you change “Jefferson” to “Jeppesen” to avoid the need for every armchair user to have a go at you.

If you’re deadset on using the Jepp charts, I use a combination of Avplan and JeppFD. The former for flight planning/weather and the latter for charts in-flight. Works quite well I think.

Currently been testing both OzRunways and AvPlan, can agree with WhiskeyKilo that the planning/weather in AvPlan is very good. I preferred the layout and general workflow of AvPlan as well, but it seems to come down to personal preference. Both of them allow you to run a trial first, so best recommendation is to use both and see what you like.

As far as I know, Jeppesen don't make VFR charts for Australia. They seem to have VFR products for South Africa, Europe and the US though. I'm fairly sure the only EFBs that have Australian VFR charts approved by CASA are AvPlan and OzRunways.

I've looked in to various EFBs just for fun. My take on it all is that unless a product is specifically designed for Australia, it will fall short in some way. That said, looking at the Foreflight website, they seem to have the basis covered. The only VFR chart you seem to get from Jepps is a generic enroute chart with roads, cities, etc. It doesn't have the sort of information that a VTC or VNC has.

It sounds like to me that if I want to fully utilise my EFB in VFC then I should really elect to use either Avplan or Ozrunways. A shame as the logbook feature in foreflight looks terrific. Now to choose between the two Aussie contingents and decide on a digital logbook.
