80 Years ago today at RAF Duxford

On 4th August 1938, Jeffrey Quill delivered to third production Supermarine Spitfire (K9789) to 19 Squadron at the then RAF Duxford.

A few days later, 66 Squadron at Duxford also received its first Spitfire.

The rest, as they say, is history...

11th of August was the first to enter service according to this painting by JW Mitchell.

And 80 years later there are about 14 Spitfires at Duxford...…

The date I quoted was sent to me from IWM Duxford themselves (in an email)-they are quite up to speed with the intricate details of the history of their own airfield in my experience....
