Will MoL do a GO on Flybe and blow them out of the water?

Airline's cheap service set to start price war
Irish Post 24 Jul 2002

A NEW airfares price war is about to break out offering budget travel for thousands of travellers to Ireland.
Rebranded airline Flybe is pledging to take on Ryanair and other low-cost air carriers on routes to Ireland.

Flybe - which changed its name from British European this week - will offer cut-price deals on several routes serving Dublin, Cork, Belfast and Shannon.

The airline has announced a package of radical changes to its pricing and product portfolio.

In its new deal Flybe has pledged to bring in heavily discounted one-way tickets from as low as £29 giving passengers a flexible deal, whatever ticket they buy - and at the same time overcoming minimum stay restrictions.

All tickets will be changeable up to two hours before departure at a cost of £25, with all tickets non-refundable.

The airline's two premium fares, Business and Premium Economy, will remain fully refundable and fully changeable at any time.

Managing director Jim French said: "The airline industry is constantly evolving, and low cost airlines are the latest innovators - the current fashion icons of the industry.

"We cannot ignore these changes. We can, however, take this opportunity to tear up the rule book, to create something new.

"Taking the best of both types of airline we are creating a new generation of airline, offering a new deal for air travellers."

Travel consultant Pat Byrne said he welcomed Flybe's competition

"It's a great day for the Irish, as the song goes," he said.

So where exactly does Flybe fly from DUB and with what? Dash 8s to Exeter and Jersey? That'll frighten MO'L. BE needs to consider the dangers of trying to be all things to all people; by all means go down the lo-co route, but how do you offer a low cost product on a Dash 8, where fares on the JER-DUB route could easily top £200 (and certainly no less than £150).

BE is not going to be a proper lo-co airline without a suitable fleet. It needs to be a market creator if it's going to access new markets. 146s are not an ideal lo-co type; the airline's evaluation of the new type to be chosen in place of the RJX will need to reflect this; 319s seem to be the best choice.

What other routes is BE considering out of DUB?

Well said Akerosid.

Nice to see that the public can be the only winners here, but its sure is starting to get confusing as to whats going on.

And surely AF must have given their consent, in view of the fact that all BE aircraft are to be branded Flybe eventually, with the full name British European being disposed.

Anyway, nice work for the stencilling people, since the 146's will now have to read:

"Air France by British European by Flybe and all part of the Walker Aviation Group"

I don't think so........

I don't see how flyBE will get into price wars with Ryanair. None of the routes are identical but if they start competing on the DUB - UK routes, MOL will certainly give them the GO treatment.

I don't know if flyBE will be that stupid - they'll continue to offer their 2 class product out of SNN and ORK and make a killing that way as it is still way cheaper than the fares offered by EI and BA.
As long as they stay away from STN and other Ryanair destinations I'm sure they'll be very successful - all the best to them!

flybe. (don't forget the dot!!) have taken a few strange decisions in the past 18 months so don't take it for granted that stupid decisions are taken this time round!
flybe. are still looking for their true role in the uk fly market - are they trunk line, feeder or franchise partner?
Bearded Jim needs to consider where he's taking the company next.
