Guys, quick one. I've just watched Air Crash Investigation (yes I know it may be a little dramatised....) about Garuda 421 in 2002, when it lost all power and force-landed in a river. The story centres on the fact that a faulty battery meant the crew had insufficient power after 2 attempted engine restarts to start the APU, so lost all instrumentation etc when the battery finally died.

I thought that, in circumstances like this, a Ram Air Turbine deployed automatically. Is this not a standard (mandatory?) fit for passenger aircraft?
