Fatal mid air collision in Idaho USA 5 years ago between a Piper Arrow and a Piper Tri-pacer which were on finals to land. Both pilots survived with serious injuries but a 20 month old child in the Arrow tragically died.

This video has now emerged on Youtube.

It is a grim reminder of what can happen when you have a low wing airplane in the circuit descending with a high wing plane just below it. It seems both pilots made radio calls but neither heard the other. In the wreckage of one of the aircraft it was discovered the volume knob was turned fully ante-clockwise.

With blind spots inherent in all aircraft types this type of accident is my biggest concern when flying light aircraft. I know this accident happened 5 years ago but it is such a good lesson for keeping a good look out in the circuit and listening for other aircraft.

Wow. It's possible that's what happened in Florida last week. See the recent thread in this forum, "Piper and Cessna down in Everglades". Four dead, including two instructors.
