Hi everyone,

I have noticed there has been a lot of talk in recent years relating to the "difficulty" of exams being sat in the UK compared to other EASA member states (and therefore presenting an unfair advantage to those sitting away from the UK). I noticed how the ATPL (A) pass rates used to be published online by the CAA (which for some reason stopped) so I decided to make a Freedom of Information request to the UK CAA to determine the pass rates during the past 12 months (01 June 17 - 31 May 18) as well as the previous year (2016 - 2017).

As you, me and everyone who reads this has the right to access the data I have decided to share it with you (I also think many of you would be interested in it!).

The pass rates for the previous year, 01 June 16 - 31 May 17, are in brackets:

SUBJECT // PASS RATE 17-18 // (PASS RATE 16-17)
Air Law - 83% (87%)
Airframe/Systems/Power Plant/Electrics - 87% (89%)
Aircraft General Knowledge - Instrumentation - 83% (81%)
Mass & Balance - 81% (82%)
Performance - 78% (72%)
Flight Planning - 76% (81%)
Human Performance and Limitations - 85% (84%)
Meteorology - 79% (77%)
General Navigation - 86% (82%)
Radio Navigation - 85% (90%)
Operational Procedures - 83% (91%)
Principles of Flight - 76% (73%)
VFR Communications - 95% (96%)
IFR Communications - 97% (98%)

Nice info, but, is this the pass rate or the average score?

The pass rate. For example, out of all Air Law (A) exams sat between 01/06/17 and 31/05/18, 83% of these exams were a pass :).

Not as bad as I expected, having this week performance and flight planning...:ok:

I agree, I also expected them to be worse. Best of luck with the exams!

Not as bad as I expected either, on average it's probably a 1 in 5 or 1 in 6 fail which is quite good I guess

I would be interested to see the results of other CAA's

Indeed, making a comparison between the pass rates for UK CAA exams and other member states would be really interesting.
