Hello, can any Tornado pilots solve a mystery for me. I am looking for a Tornado altimeter to help complete my Tornado front panel project. I already have the radar altimeter but i need the main one. Someone has one for sale on ebay which they are claiming is a Tornado altimeter, they even provided a photo of a Tornado cockpit showing the altimeter and it is the same one as shown in their listing.
However I have being doing a lot of research about Tornado cockpits so i can make my panel as accurate as possible (it will be a GR1) and all the photos I have seen of the altimeter (apart from the 1 image that the ebay seller provided) show a different one, so did the Tornado only ever have one altimeter type or did they occasionally use another type?

As you can see it is similar but not identical to this which is the altimeter i see in every other image of a Tornado cockpit

That's a rear cockpit altimeter on ebay.

Not a pilot...but there are images online of various cockpits and both those styles are in them. A German IDS shows the eBay version and an image of an F3 shows the one with the standby toggle switch.

Ah that is interesting thanks. I guess I just have not seen those images, perhaps they were only used in German variants. I have noticed there is sometimes some different variant of other instruments, well at least i have seen one Tornado HSI which seems slightly different.
Could you post links to images which show the ebay altimeter?
Cheers

There you go Jayviator: Panavia Tornado IDS - Germany - Navy | Aviation Photo #1048362 | Airliners.net (http://www.airliners.net/photo/Germany-Navy/Panavia-Tornado-IDS/1048362/L) and https://www.airteamimages.com/panavia-tornado_ZE887_united-kingdom---royal-air-force_10177_large.html

Perhaps the eBay one is one that his Grandad took off a dead German in ze var ;-)

Online German navy IDS versions shows the eBay type. Other RAF, Italian and GAF version cockpit photos I can find show the lighter coloured reset knob type.

There could also be a difference between front and rear seat styles.
This back-seater alt is similar to that one on eBay. Good luck in sorting that conundrum out. :-)

Thanks for the help chaps. I think i will just wait and hope for a "proper" altimeter to come along, from the front cockpit of a RAF version. Got my latest part today the control column, so i just fitted the grip to the top of that.
