Anxious air travellers can now rest easy with the threat of a WestJet strike seemingly at an end.

The Calgary-based airline and the Air Line Pilots Association have agreed to a settlement process through the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. Both sides have agreed to mediation — and if required, final and binding arbitration.

"I think the most important news tonight is that the threat of strike action has been removed for WestJet guests. WestJet guests can now continue to book and travel in absolute confidence around their trip," said WestJet CEO Ed Sims from Calgary International Airport Friday night.

Earlier this month, WestJet's pilots voted 91 per cent in favour of walking off the job. They were legally eligible to go on strike as of May 19, but the pilots committed not to disrupt travel plans for passengers over the Victoria Day long weekend as a goodwill gesture.

WestJet has been negotiating with the pilots union over a new working contract for months. The sticking point for the union was the Calgary-based airlines' latest venture — the ultra-low-cost carrier Swoop.

The airline initially planned to staff the discount carrier with non-company pilots in order to keep costs low. Swoop pilots would be hired from overseas and paid less than WestJet's staff pilots. The union's position is that only WestJet pilots should fly the airline's fleet, including those of its subsidiaries.

After a tense week of negotiations, sources tell CBC News, WestJet agreed to let union-represented pilots fly all WestJet planes — including Swoop — but wages and working conditions are still being negotiated.Neither party can walk awaySims declined to comment on the specifics of the negotiations, but said the issues surrounding Swoop will "be part of the terms of the arbitration agreement."

Neither party can walk away from the table, Sims said. Both WestJet and the union will continue negotiations, which will ultimately conclude in binding arbitration determined by the third-party arbitrator.

WestJet CEO Ed Sims said Friday the financial damage to the airline can be counted in the 'tens of millions,' which does not include the impact on the company's share price. (CBC)"We would like a settlement reached as soon as possible," Sims said. "I think at our most optimistic, in the next few weeks and ideally no later than the end of June."

Operating under the threat of a strike has been damaging to the airline — both financially and in terms of its reputation. Sims said the losses can be counted in the "tens of millions of dollars," which doesn't include the effect on WestJet's share price.​

That fact is to be determined through arbitration. Initially yes, the swoop startup will probably be flown by those hired for swoop but if and when it goes to a base bid, the swoop pilots may not be able to hold the same position. I think this is the more likely outcome.

The whole argument to date is that there are no Swoop pilots and those hired into the positions were employed against the previous agreement. With the latest remarks from the MEC and WestJet, it confirms there are no Swoop pilots. Swoop flying will be done by WestJet pilots. Therefore, those who were hired will either need to find work elsewhere or will be placed at the bottom of the department list. That position on the list may not permit a pilot hired at Swoop to hold a 737 position in the case of a position bid system that includes Encore.

Considering Encore begins negotiations soon, it might be a while before a pilot hired for Swoop has a clear idea of how things will go.

Meanwhile those who were hired have an employment agreement that WestJet must honour. This could get very interesting and expensive for the company.

Not really J. O. Those already employed are on probation and can be let go with or without cause at any time for any reason until they are off of probation.

Nor should he. There is no reason the pilots should ask for a contract that requires any other group to suffer as a consequence. But I'm not sure the sentiment extends to those pilots hired at Swoop. If indeed they will be added to the department list, then negotiating a settlement for the WestJet pilots is also working out a settlement for those hired at Swoop. In effect, they'd be in the same basket. I've taken all of those statements by Mr. Sims - both internally and externally - to mean he would not sacrifice the CSAs, TAC, or Tech Ops for the benefit of the pilots.

Hello everyone, thank u for all the updates. I have applied for swoop airline and they called me for an interview. The interview went pretty well. After 3 weeks. I got one email which was very difficult to understand . If anybody else received this kind of a email ? It seems they want us to say no indirectly. 🙂

The famous 'Pool' used to well by some of the ME carriers. A great way to put everyone's aspirations on 'hold', in a holding pool. So, don't take this to believe that you have a job. I have seen many aspiring people give up a job on the fact they are in a 'pool' with no promises. In short, don't quit your day job. You have gotten through one door but there are no guarantees. The pool is deep and if you give up a job, you may just drown.

All of the 40 Swoop captain seats (including the 26 bypass captain pay positions) were filled internally by WestJet pilots. There were 24 (I believe) FO positions that were not filled by WestJet mainline pilots (I mean why would you bid to make less money for more hours). But there is an Encore (Q400 WestJet regional) bid that is supposed to close on Thursday. If all the Swoop FO positions are not filled by Encore pilots Swoop can hire off the street. I am guessing they will be filled internally though.
So if there remain any open FO positions they would be pulled from the Swoop pool.
