Multi-Crew operations without ATPL

This may sound like a silly question, but on the CAA website it says that to credit an ATPL(A) licence, you must have had 500hrs in multi-pilot operations. What jobs or any flight can you do that requires a multi-pilot operation without an ATPL?

First officer with Airline.
Second Officer (cruise relief co pilot) with Airline.
Both require CPL with I/R and ATPL human factors or similar training from the airline.
Most applicants would have passed all of their ATPL Theory exams.
For an ATPL(A) you need 1500 hours total and 500 Multi pilot (plus some other things like night etc.) and to be 21 years of age.
CPL licence at 18 years of age.

Just to add a bit to W1 post ~ for the issue of the initial multi-pilot type rating, a junior birdman will need to have successfully attended a MCC course once the light ac flying is completed for the CPL/IR licence issue.

EASA have now published details of the new style of enhanced MCC course ~ APS, where the JOC element is embedded into the 40 hours (10 exercises) course.
Your MCC/APS certificate will state that you have completed this new certification level.
