wondering if anyone can help me out
Can anyone please explain to me the difference between an IMC rating and an IR ?

Yup the main difference is a lot of hard work.

The IMC gives you a good appreciation of instrument flying and helps the average PPL become a more accurate flyer? However the IR is an 55 hr course mainly procedural, which means flying on the airways, instrument approaches, both precision and non precision and instrument flying to very high standards, with tight tolerances.

Also you need an IR to fly for the airlines or generally commercially attached to your CPL. Overall though the difference is the standards that you are expected to reach to pass a test which is with a CAA flight test examiner rather than your club examiner
