Hi all

I am trying to find out which RAF units a civilian glider tug Chipmunk - G-BCKN - was attached to during its time with the service as WP811. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Might be worth trying to beg/borrow/steal a copy:

Air-Britain's RAF Serials index records WP811's history as:

24 RFS
10 RFS
202 AFS
7 FTS
83 Gp CF
Wildenrath
Southampton UAS
Birmingham UAS
Edinburgh UAS
Manchester UAS
1 SoTT
South Cerney
Halton
Benson
1 SoTT

You might also try the de Havilland Chipmunk Appreciation Society page on FaceBook for further info or pictures. Some of the contributors have a tremendous knowledge.

I got involved in the running of Chilterns RAFGSA club based at Benson from 1963 until 1970 (whence we moved to Abingdon). We used to borrow WP811 at weekends from Halton whenever Stu Mead could be persuaded to part with it.

Many thanks to you all for the information. I do indeed have a copy of "Chipmunk - The first fifty years" but was unable to find any reference, thanks again!!

After Graduation from Halton in August`62 ,I was `attached` to Station Flight for 3 months as a Fitter,so `worked on WP811,WK551 and WK552.Flew with various pilots including Dolicher, Snare ,Drinkell, Roberts, Wood, Maygothling, and Padres Dawes and Morley. Then it was off to `reality of S Cerney for the camping and living in tents,in winter in Wales, but living in the Sgts Mess at SC,with a batman to bring tea in the mornings....such happy days..!
