A real loss

This is from AAvPA president Dr Melanie Todd:

It is with great sadness that we heard of the passing of Dr Rob Lee this morning. Rob was a important figurehead not only in Australian psychology and human factors but globally as well.

Rob graduated from the Australian National University in 1970 with First Class Honours in
Psychology, winning the Australian Psychological Society Prize. In 1974 he completed his PhD
in Psychology at the University of St Andrews, Scotland. His research was concerned with human performance in complex systems, with particular reference to aircraft.

In 1976, he was appointed Senior Psychologist, Operational Command, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). He became the first RAAF psychologist to serve as a human factors specialist on RAAF aircraft accident investigation teams.
Rob was then instrumental in establishing human factors capability with the Bureau of Air Safety Investigation (BASI, now ATSB), a capability which has earned the ATSB international recognition. He continued to promote aviation psychology, human factors and investigation knowledge around the world before he became ill. His knowledge, passion and support for aviation psychology and human factors will be sorely missed.

As many of you know, Rob was instrumental to AAvPA in it's early days and we recognised this commitment with an award for 'Outstanding Service to Aviation Psychology' in 2012. This commitment will be again acknowledged at our symposium in November.

Our thoughts are with Sue and his family at this sad time.

Dr Melanie Todd
On behalf of the AAvPA Executive Committee

Oh no. He was an alumni of 2FLT NSWAIRTC. I had the pleasure of meeting him in 2001 when 2FLT/ 302SQNAAFC held a parade for the AIRTC's 60th anniversary. He and a bunch of other former cadets attended with Rob making a lovely speech as well as AVM Dave Rogers, Lovely guy. Huge loss to the aviation industry.
