View Full Version : So MyTravel Low cost to hub at Prestwick

The Glasgow Evening Times reports that MyTravel’s stand-alone low-cost carrier will go head-to-head with Ryanair at Prestwick Airport.
The report in yesterday’s evening edition said that Ryanair is looking forward to the competition, but warned MyTravel against trying to compete on the same routes; an airport spokesperson said the MyTravel announcement was a ‘significant progression’ for Prestwick, while a MyTravel spokeswoman said the group will make an official announcement at the end of August.

MYTravel with no comment....mmm...If it is PIK (and I think it would be a good bet as they currently do a little bit there in high season and it performs well for them) they better stay away from the FR routes, they will be buried! In addition now that T Jeans is there he sure has a feel for the market ex PIK..suppose they could do a couple of North - South links as well as the sun stuff. ;)

Why would My Travel "get buried" if they went head to head with Ryanair? From what many passengers say, a courteous low cost outfit could cause MOL some real problems.

Nothing to do with courtesy - FR can't make any money out of that! - it is all to do with price...I am not saying that they are right all I am saying is that is the way it is. If MYTravel take them on I know who I am putting my money on.
Taking on FR in their own back yard is probably about as wise as rebranding an airline My Travel.

Have to agree with Fokker70 on this. They will be buried head-to-head with FR. No-one can compete with FR's aggressiveness and size. Look what happened to GO on the DUB-Scotland routes. In my experience a far better airline to fly on, yet FR's lower prices won the day, which they almost always will. Money talks louder than courtesy.

does it actually say they're going head to head? I doubt it.
Ryanair don't do Spain do they? I thought the idea behind this was to offer more flexibility to Holiday destinations? my guess is Malaga /Alicante/Palma/ maybe Canaries..all places Mytravel have a big presence at.
Anyway it might not even leave the drawing board if First Choice takover is looming.;)

I don´t imagine mytravel will go head to head on any given route for the sake of it. They are in this to make cash not just to satisfy some ego trip, if that's what you're sayin F70...
...but if they did, why do think they would be buried? Agreed, OLeary is a skilled blarney merchant -and he has been made to look good by being compared with BA in the recent past. But Mytravel's costs must be amongst the lowest in the business and they have plenty of experience and economies of scale when it comes to flying to the Med.

1. Tim Jeans is now the Managing Director of the My Travel low cost schedule. As he remains at Ryanair they are unlikely to compete.
2. The first expected schedules are Nice, Malaga and Barcelona. None are served by FR. In fact FR haven't even started into Spain and won't for another year or 2.
Seems more complimentary than competitive move. Jeans knows PIK well and is being offered a whole package for flight Operations and a call centre etc.
FR are shortly to announce their new maintenance base. what price is to be PIK and My Travel will start with B737s ???

The sooner more comes north of watford the better. Do we all want to head south to fly on holiday. think not. There is nothing wrong with PIK, GLA or EDI. And PIK has plenty of space for development

Standard airline bluff; I am sure. Must start strong in poorly served areas (MAN, LBA) before ego massage begins.
Back yard fight not necessary and financially unbackable. Look to Midlands and North West/East for surest bet. Newspapers lap it up in the way they dish it out.

Well, i totally agree with machone, because i had heard that the new airline by MyTravel will be based at BHX.
Is that a likely case?
When will we know more about the new airline?

Seeing as you are local - do you know if this is definate?
I read they would only fly to places they already served - they don't already serve Barcelona and Nice do they?
What about any future easyjet expansion at GLA or EDI - They will clash with them.
BigRab, FR manage to do very well at PIK, if the product is right the punters will turn up, and do not forget PIK has a large catchment area. Good luck to My Travel, not least if it means more flight crew jobs in Scotland.

PIK could make sense because the Dobbin's gob told me there would be a domestic route in there, but then I also hear BHX is a done deal, the silence is a bit odd tho, unless FC is on the cards one way or the other.
I am sure that I have seen FR aeroplanes in AGP.

Yes there are FR aircraft at AGP but these are operated as charter flights from DUB on saturdays only.

The cut-throat conflict between budget airlines is set to intensify thanks to the decision by UK travel group MyTravel to launch its own carrier.
The UK end of the operation will fly out of Birmingham and Belfast, although the firm will not divulge its plans for destinations.
Both the route map and the name and livery of the new airline will be released on Wednesday morning, a spokeswoman told BBC News Online.
Previous announcements have said the plan is to begin flights in the autumn and concentrate on main leisure routes with year-round demand.
BBC transport correspondent Simon Montague said that the initial list was likely to include Spanish destinations such as Palma, Malaga, Alicante, Majorca and the Canaries.
The company is also in talks with Glasgow Prestwick airport about launching low cost services from Scotland.

The company made clear its intention to muscle in on the lucrative budget airline market in May this year.
Presenting its results for the six months to March, it promised to divert "a small number" of its 51-strong fleet of charter aircraft into the venture.
The announcement came just a week after Easyjet, one of the strongest contenders in the sector, said that its talks to buy rival Go had been successful.
In June, MyTravel revealed who it had chosen to lead the operation: Tim Jeans, poached from his sales and marketing director position at another rival, Ryanair.

Just announced MyTravel Lite based at BHX, two a/c now and two more in 2003.
Belfast, Paris, Geneva, Alicante and Malaga are the first routes.

The new MYTLite routes from BHX are:- ALC, AGP,BFS, GVA and Paris Beauvais (not FAO and CDG)
