AT, this is why you should respect your pilots and pay them accordingly and don't get me started on reducing the experience levels on our flight decks, ably abetted by our GMO. :=

This is why you want a highly motivated and respected pilot body because when this day comes at CX, you'd better hope that the pilots in the seats are focused on their task and will do as good a job as this WN crew did. :ok::D

It already has and the guys did a magnificent job. Whether that would be the case in the future, who knows?

Haha yes and I seem to remember (correct me if I’m wrong), when it came time for the pilots in question to attend the presentation of their Polaris award, CX wouldn’t give them time off for it.

There was also the company own goal when it came to aspects of either the journey over, accompanied by partners (and rightly so), or the accommodation where self funding was required. Forgetting the big picture aspect that these two guys saved hundreds of lives and a multi-million dollar aircraft, this could have been a PR win for the company.
However somewhere in the process, someone nickel and dimed it to ensure yet another in a long line of illustrious own goals.
God bless accountants and paper shufflers. I'm sure they have it all under control and our airline is in their safe hands.

Thankfully SWA was inthe very capable hands of an ex Navy F18 dude-ess and her offsider, I'd say on reading prelim reports that she and her FO did an exceptionally good job.

That my dear paper clip counters is what it is all about.
What you MBA laden suit wearing types will never get, is that we get paid not for what we do, but for what we can do when a wheel comes off your train set, and the **** hits the fan. Or in this case the fan cowl hits the wing as the front part of the engine disintegrates. Lucky for SWA and the passengers, that Tammie Jo Shults and her FO were on the ball.

Like it or not, ex-Mil guys (&ladies) are a well trained great commodity.
Perhaps MorningCoffee and the other bean counters should take note.
You think buying and retaining experienced crew is expensive?? Then try having a fatal accident. Then you'll see how expensive things become.

It is a crying shame to see CX reduce its T&C's towards Low Cost Airline levels such that folks like Tammie would no longer be interested, and instead we have to rely on wet behind the ears 'brushwingers', and incompetent paper-clip counters and fuel hedgers, as the future custodians of the airlines safety.

This downward spiral of my beloved airline does not give me a warm confident feeling as I head into early retirement.

SWA pretty much wrote the book on being a Low Cost. True their 737 pay is now competitive with other US majors - but that's been as much the majors taking cuts since 2001. When she joined in 1993 they were paying considerably less than UA/DL etc. My assumption is she joined them more for lifestyle reasons than highest paycheck (stable roster and base, husband flies for them as well out of same base)

SWA has the most productive 737 pilots in the world. They are well paid with a generous profit sharing plan and have ample opportunities for extra work / pay and trip dropping for less pay. Their standard pattern is 3 days on, 4 days off, although variations do exist. I think most CX pilots would think they died and went to heaven if they could live a week in the life of a SWA pilot. Yes, they fly lots of sectors, but no red-eyes that I know of. Yes, early starts or late finishes, but they generally keep pilots on one or the other. Overall, a very good, not great, job with a company that values its employees. I’d trade my seniority at CX for the same seniority (start date) at SWA in 2 seconds. Maybe a bit less money, but a much better lifestyle, multiple basing options, and an enjoyable cockpit culture.

Close friend is a SWA Captain. Works Tuesday through Thursday every week. Has not worked Friday through Monday for 10 years. Has not missed a bday, anniv, Christmas or Thanksgiving in over 15 years. Last year earned $418K usd. Then you can factor in a great retirement, medical and travel benefits. CX, what is your benchmark for our pay and benefits? How about some lowly little "LCC" like SWA? What a joke this place has become. RH, how does it feel to be the CEO of a joke of an airline? How does it feel to know that nearly all your valued employees hold you in utter contempt? That fact alone means you have failed in your job. Never mind the fact that the CX share price is lower than it was 20 years ago. Counting the days until i'm gone.

CX has a great profit sharing scheme but sadly only works when it makes a profit.
They figured out many years back how to suck the profit out of the cash cow and route it into subsidiary companies where the profit goes into the swollen Swire wallet..

Another broken promise to their staff. I still laugh when I think back a few years ago. Over a Billion (with a B) profit, but "not enough" to trigger the wonderful profit sharing scheme. Joke. And not a funny one. This company treats it's staff with utter contempt, and reached a new low this past CNY when they decided to not pay their Captains anything while other staff received a full month PLUS a pay raise. Funny coincidence, I have been off for a month total sickness since then.

Bingo.

Unfortunately this can have the knock-on effect of poisoning the cow. And historically has.

Some unduly negative comments about the non-payment of 13th month. The sacrifice made by the pilots, particularly the Captains, was an opportunity for them to show some leadership and save the company HK$200-300m.

These savings enabled a modest dividend payout in April to the shareholders of 5 cents per share, which cost $197m (about the same as the savings made by non payment of 13th month). The Captains in particular can be heartened that their 13th month went to many good causes in Beijing, Doha and London. So to all the pilots, a hearty Xiexie, shukraan and "cheers fellas". :ooh:
