Maybe a rehash of MH17 can be avoided this time. Trump is promising to send missiles poshaste to Syria, Russia has promised shootdowns of same, it seems prudent for civilian airliners to avoid an area where ground defence is switched on and nervous.

Might have something to do with this ...

From Moscow Times 11th April;

The Russian Navy is reportedly scheduled to launch firing drills off the coast of Syria on Wednesday amid fears of an imminent U.S. airstrike against Syria following a suspected chemical attack.https://themoscowtimes.com/news/russian-naval-exercises-scheduled-off-syrian-coast-amid-expected-us-airstrike-61136

Euronews (12th April) is also reporting that all bar one of the Russian naval assets in the port of Tartus has put to sea.
