MARION, Ind. (WANE) - A single-engine Cessna was about to take off at Marion Municipal Airport Monday evening when it hit the tail of another plane that had just landed, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Two people from Indiana were killed in the incident, police said.

The FAA confirmed the crash happened around 5 p.m. When the Cessna 150 hit the Cessna 525 Citation Jet, the smaller plane burst into flames.













Marion police told NewsChannel the two people inside the Cessna 150 died. Their names haven't been released yet, but police said they are from Indiana.

There were five people inside the Citation Jet, and police told NewsChannel 15 they were not hurt. The jet is registered to Avis Industrial Corporation.

FAA investigators are at the Marion airport to investigate the crash. They said the initial report indicates the Citation had just landed and the Cessna was attempting to take off.

"The jet was already landed and coming to a stop, if you will, and there was not enough rise for the Cessna and it clipped the tail end of the jet," Marion Police Deputy Chief Stephan Dorsey told NewsChannel 15.

"Also, at the departure and arrival ends of runway 15/33, there was a sign stating, "Traffic Using Runway 4/22 Cannot Be Seen, Monitor Unicom 122.7."
" The surviving pilot of the Cessna 525 stated that he did not see the departing Cessna 150 while he was on a straight-in approach to runway 22, nor did he see the 150 during the landing roll. He stated that he did not recall making a radio call on UNICOM, but did utilize his on board Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) system while on approach. He stated that the TCAS did not show any traffic on the airport."

No need to screw around with old-fashioned radios when you've got a fancy TCAS to look at, right? Wow.

Witnesses in the airport lounge heard the 150 pilot's UNICOM call(s), so all the 525 had to do was listen out. They couldn't be bothered to even tune in and listen?
