Reported a short while ago that the British actor Bill Maynard, best known in recent years for his role of Claude Greengrasss in the TV series "Heartbeat" passed away in hospital in Leicestershire, shortly after breaking his hip in a fall from a mobility scooter at the age of 89.

My offspring will remember him as Sergeant Beetroot in Worzal Gummage .(sp?)

It was as 'The Gaffer' that he delivered one of the best ever comedy lines:

Secretary arrives for work and finds a computer on her desk (the latest thing at the time):
"I hope you don't expect ME to learn how to use that THING!"

The Gaffer:
"No, no, don't you worry about that - that's for blaming, not for using".

I well remember Great Scott, it's Maynard. Loved those sloppy sweaters.

Met him in the Ghurka restaurant in Aldershot when he was making that series. Girl with us went over and asked for his autograph; 'of course my dear, no problem'.
Seemed like a nice guy.
I too remember him first from 'Great Scott it's Maynard' with the equally great Terry Scott.

And many more. Probably his peak and deffo the best sitcom of the 80s.
