A Taiwanese pilot died on Thursday in the cockpit of a Mandarin Airlines plane preparing for take-off at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City.

An airport official who confirmed the incident to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper said the pilot died from health issues.

The 35-year-old Taiwanese national was about to captain a flight bound for Taichung City, Taiwan from Ho Chi Minh City when his first officer found him passing out inside the cockpit of the Boeing 737-800 at 11:26 am.

All 162 passengers had already boarded the flight and the plane was being readied to taxi onto the runway for take-off.

The co-pilot immediately called on the crew and airport authorities to provide medical support for the unconscious captain.

He was rushed to a military hospital less than two kilometers away where doctors pronounced him dead that same day.

Passengers on the Mandarin Airlines flight were ushered back to the airport terminal and placed on a new flight later that same day.

The deceased pilot held a pilot’s license valid through February 2020 and a medical certificate valid through October 31 this year, according to an airport official.

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Ho Chi Minh City was notified of the death of its citizen, the official said.

Mandarin Airlines is an airline based in Taipei, Taiwan, under the China Airlines umbrella.

The Taiwanese carrier operates domestic and regional international flights, including weekly flights to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

I knew of a man who regularly played footbal and had worked out in the gym that day (again, a regular event). In the evening - he had a major heart attack and died on the spot. It is indeed natural causes.
