Once saw the Pan Am F/O from the Tenerife disaster interviewed, think programme was around 2005, perhaps a little earlier but certainly 25+ years after the disaster.

He was standing in front of the boxed contents of the aircraft wreck that were still stored after all this time.

I never quite figured out why.

I am aware of some very serious accidents where the remains of the aircraft were stored for very long periods because the insurance company owned the wreckage, and perhaps were anticipating the possible need for evidence in the future. If they have it and own it, why would they give it up if there were any chance they could ever need it again.

Some of the Lockerbie Pan Am 747 wreckage was still at the AAIB at Farnborough some years back, and I believe most is still held in store elsewhere in case of any further legal moves.
