RN Aircrew now issued USN G-1?

Was browsing RN website thus came across FONA profile here. His flight jacket looks like suspiciously like USN /USMC / USCG G-1 type (albeit with provision for epauletteas) issue in the photo

Well if they're not, I'd suggest they can at least buy and wear one now. I doubt it's issued by the RN, maybe he received it on exchange or as a gift on a multi-national command tour. Reminds me of when Torpy and hanger-ons were photographed wearing leather jackets in blues during a visit to The Pentagon. When it was pointed out by several people, including letters to "Catering & Handshake Weekly" (ie RAF News) that it was verboten to wear the jacket with blues, the dress regs were quietly changed.....

"Zip in" cold weather lining and sheepskin collar. MUST be ordered WITH the jacket and cannot be retro fitted.

Apart from looking pretty boring as a jacket, how can you not 'retro-fit' an item which is 'zipped-in'?

Seems a bit daft not to build in a zip so x, y or z can be added at a later stage if the wearer desires .. Err, that 'after sales market' = hooge profit margins!!!!, way in excess of the original item... thanks to those very same add-ons.

Just about every government supplier knows how to extort the most, err I mean adapt their offering to procurement requirements and protocols. In response to, and to get the most out of blatant procurement stupidity...

Wonder how much of this demand has come from FAA/RAF, and how much has come from Aviation Leathercraft?

Of course, I blame the Americans; IIRC they allegedly re-introduced the A-2 (made by Cooper?) in the mid-80's to help address pilot retention issues, also (allegedly) along with a financial bonus....

Then there was a film, starring Mr. T. Cruise, and the next thing G-1's become a "must have".

"RAF Uniform Policy changed on 10 May 2010. As part of these changes, the wearing of a privately purchased leather flying jacket with No 2 Dress, in lieu of the current General Purpose Jacket, was authorised. Previously this jacket was only authorised for aircrew. This authorisation has now been extended to all RAF Officers, Warrant Officers and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers."

So a stable belt/chip poke in other words.
