Hi guys and gals.

(Asking specifically regarding FAA/USA based training/work as a non-citizen).

I'm planning on doing my CFI/CFII after completing my CPL. I've been doing some research trying to find specific information, but it's hard to come by. I figured i might as well take a shot and ask here. So i asked a few schools and got similar answers from most of them. When asking about employment after completing the training, they basically told me this (unless i misunderstood):

You do the training on an F1-VISA which gives you a 1-year work authorization. After that year you get an M1-VISA. Since the M1 requires you to be a student and the M1 visa does not allow you to be paid a salary, you're enrolled in the ATP course, at no charge.

So this is where i'm lost. It seems that, while you're on the M1-VISA, you're earning nothing. So when exactly do you start earning? I'm not asking this because i expected to "get rich", but rather because i'm concerned about how i'll cover the general costs of living when i'm uncertain about when you actually start earning a salary.

Another alternative i considered was to do my CFI/CFII and search for a job after completing the training. That is to say, after completing my training, i'll go back home, and search for work in the US, online. I recognize that, for this, i'll need a "work permit". That is yet another topic i've had a lot of trouble actually finding an answer for. I'm not sure a.) if it's possible, and b.) if it's viable.

I was hoping someone here might be able to give me some advice on what the best course of action would be work as an Instructor in the US.

Thanks in advance.
