If you spin them very quickly, the snow with centrifuge out of the treads. Well, two wheel's worth.

Studs want do you much good on loose snow, on packed snow and ice however...
If you're on summer tyres, or in exceptionally bad conditions, snow chains would be the solution.

Some snow tires use very soft rubber compounds and are great fun on a mini for squeeling around roundabouts at 40 mph :)
