Just a thought I had

And one that everyone can contribute to, so post those images of the RAF aircraft, past, present and future.

To start the ball rolling some of mine.

Not quite 1 April 1918, but about a month later. It's an Armstrong-Whitworth FK8 of 10 Squadron at Droglandt in France, near the Belgian border, with Squadron officers and a member of the Chinese Labour Corps.

AA62, if you've still got 'em handy, do a new reply to this thread (not a quick reply) and there is a paperclip icon (next to the smiley) which allows you to upload photos and other files to PPRuNe.

Yes, the Buccaneer and Hunter were at a recent photoshoot at Bruntingthorpe, the Vulcan, Gnat and Meteor at the Church Fenton airshow the other year. I'll look out a few more RAF aircraft shots from my digital files but searching through all my old slides is more something for the winter nights!

Not a problem, the lanc is showing now

On flickr under your image on the right side of the page select the curved arrow between the star and the downward pointing arrow.

Select BB code, in the box that comes up select the bottom window and select a size you want, then right click and copy the blue code above that window.

On here if you paste it into the reply box it will link as your Lanc is to the page on flickr, but if you select go advanced tab below the quick reply box and post the image in there and untick the three miscellaneous options boxes it will post the image like mine has.

For some reason the site now has them on as default..

I bet that people don't know what those handles on the Provost just behind the cockpit are for.

The small one at the top to hang on to whilst opening the canopy.

The big angled one to hang on to climbing onto the wing with a chute wrapped around your backside and also so that you can pull yourself down and under the tailplane when you bale out.

1.3VStall,

Pop them on, there is no shame in showing your pictures, that's not what the thread is about, it's about celebrating the RAF's 100 years, some of the rarest aircraft shots that have survived would never have stood up to so called scrutiny, it is simply down to someone, no matter how good or bad a photographer taking the time to preserve a moment for posterity which without, would have been lost in time.

When we did our baleout drills way back in 1960 they would put a mattress underneath the trailing edge of the wing so you didn't hurt yourself when you slid off.

The last time I was in one was in the 70s when the apprentice's' school in the MU at Aldergrove was closing. They used a Provost for marshalling training and I was invited to do the last full power engine runs before it was disposed of. It was fully serviceable apart from the clock and the hood seal.

After fifteen years I managed to start it with the first cartridge and again saw the blue flame coming out of the exhaust at 3,000 r.p.m and +8 boost.

I believe it went to a college in England so it probably never ran again.

Edit to add: It got a civvy registration and is now in Muscat Museum, Oman.

Re the piston Provost, ok having handles to help bail out but don't like that "very nasty" looking strake at base of rear fuselage, that would hurt if you caught it.

:) If you have the Serial no you should be able to see what happened to her.
I got roped into the running team in the mid 70's on the FW190, ME-410, Ki-100 Tony etc for probably their last runs to record the engine sounds for the BBC. Now sadly all sitting silent at Cosford. Chap working at Cosford came over when I was taking some pictures of them and said nice aren't they, he looked surprised when I mentioned we ran them. I took an old friend there to see the Lincoln as he flew in it in the Air Cadets.

Fareastdriver
14th May 2018, 19:55
I think those strakes are a modern radio aid as a picture of XF 877 r.i.p. does not have them. WV494, the one I did the run on was 7922M at the time. I was asked to run it as I had last flown it on 22nd February 1961.

AAh, Britannia, and the heady days of the mid 60s when the RAF could send two Brits to the USA for a fortnight to take two Towers cadet entries to visit Washington, Colorado Springs and 3 days R&R in New York. The navigator of our aircraft signed his route reports variously as Henry the Navigator, Vasco da Gama and John Cabot. They even took a bunch of USAF cadets on an aerial tour of the Rockies for an hour or so. How times have changed. Now not even the PM can always get an RAF aircraft when she wants one.

I flew a Britannia in a VIP role with a dozen or so IDC graduates on a North America tour in 1973. We left Brize Norton on September 12th and returned on October 16th! The itinerary was Ottawa, Quebec, Resolute Bay, Yellowknife, Vancouver, Victoria, San Fransisco, Vandenberg, Colorado Springs, Norfolk, Washington, New York (JFK). The only snag we experienced during the whole trip was an invertor failure on the final JFK - BZN leg. Total flying time 49.30 hrs with a lot of time off!

brakedwell: If I remember correctly, whilst you were taking one half of that year's IDC to the States, another Brit was taking the rest around Europe and the Middle East, also with lots of time off. Those trips consumed an enormous number of airframe days from the month's Brit task - and there speaks the Upavon 'Tasking' chap at the time. There was no way they were ever going to survive the 74/75 Defence Review and its reduction of the ATF, but they must have been exceedingly enjoyable for both crew and pax whilst they lasted.

(The Imperial Defence College was the earlier name for what became the Royal College of Defence Studies [RCDS], and I've no idea what it might be called now, if anything of the kind still exists.)

From October 1951 onwards Tiger Moths in the Rhodesian Air Training Group (RATG) were gradually phased-out to be replaced by Chipmunks.

Chipmunks for the RATG were built at Hawarden near Chester, crated and shipped out to Durban in South Africa, transferred to rail wagons and sent to 394 MU at RAF Heany near Bulawayo. Here they were assembled, flight tested and then flown up to Thornhill.

Thornhill (5 FTS) was allocated 27 Chipmunks the first Chipmunk arriving at Thornhill in September 1951. This is it.

brakedwell,
we were there on July 14 1970. Did not take them too long to get it up and running ! Pic shows RN Wessex which had come to pick up the piston we delivered for the RFA ship.

Warmtoast-thank you.

My chum sadly passed away last year-he had a lovely painting of 'his' Tiger Moth and Harvard flying together on the wall of his study.

He did actually fly Chipmunks later in life, both in the RAF (he was sent to Halton as a Flt Cmdr for refusing a CFS Tour), and as a Civilian whilst flying for BOAC/BA as part of a syndicate.

Looking through my Albums I came across these. Don’t know where or when this first one was taken but it was after 1991 because of the 16(R) Squadron Jaguar.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.gmforum.com-vbulletin/1367x1784/album0002_97c021ae2009c68105ba77778fc16159fa74223c.jpg

Again don’t know where or when but sometime between 1991 and 2005.

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.gmforum.com-vbulletin/1711x1217/album0003_4b5730c506ab46b39476710615450e25e2bf3326.jpg

Out with the old and in with the new. Two ‘S’’s from when the Jaguars replaced the Phantoms at Laarbruch 1975 / 76.

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.gmforum.com-vbulletin/1312x1921/album0004_249964d3acb9e3d4e970c89daa4c8efbfd8ee8ea.jpg

Another ‘S’. 16 Squadron Buccaneer over Sardinia in 1976 during the annual APC there. I was one of the lucky groundcrew to have a jolly there with the late Ken Tait as my pilot. We finished the jolly by doing some (very) close formation aerobatics. Brilliant and effortlessly smooth for the ex- red arrows pilot. F/L M (Malcolm?) Brown was in ‘S’ which can clearly be seen as XW538. A year later, during a low level airfield attack on Volkel in Holland his engine exploded and the crew ejected safely. However, the report says it was again ‘S’ but XW548 not 538. Both were on 16 during my time there and I cannot remember 538 being re-lettered to ‘T’ and 548 becoming ‘S’. All the sites I have seen maintain that 538 was ‘T’ and 548 was ‘S’. Any info would be appreciated – sorry about the thread drift.

warmtoast,
nice pic of the Hastings after a para drop. Brought back memories of long days at PTS. In case anyone is wondering we always landed with the para doors stowed after such trips as they were a pig to refit and it was quite easy to lose one. And if you think that was dodgy look at this pic of a Hastings landing after a 'roller conveyor' sortie. The pic is not one of mine so apologies https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.gmforum.com-vbulletin/1024x769/hastings_landing_roller_conveyor_9a643f43e4be282e1f8cbe824fd cd58a1b9c6367.jpg

I was taught by an `old` Hastings captain at AAEE,whilst doing a bit of freelance co-piloting ,at about the height shown in #161,you squeeze the brakes on then off, the pressure dissipates slowly causing a bit of wheel drag, and helps to `nail` the wheels, preventing`hop.skipping and jumping` down the runway....Same on the Valetta...

Shades of an "in" technique to put a 727 down close to a greaser. At the last moment pole forward slightly.
