Today at approx 15.10pm a Chinook went down the Thames West to East over London at a good clip, nothing too unusual in that. However, what was unusual were 2 other Helis flying directly behind. My usual eagle eyes weren't helpful in the brief time I saw them. Chinook callsign 'PEG 1', other 2 were light grey AW109/AS332/AS 365/whatever. Anyone see them, or know what they were ? Curiosity killed the cat..... ;-)

They were two French Air Force Squirrels (AS555AN) operating out of Odiham. Serials 5390/UZ and 5455/VT.

Thanks TEEEJ! They looked like Squirrels, yet not when I was trying to work out what they were. Are the AS555 larger than the AS355, or longer ? Because of their colour I thought RNaF or some Euro-Navy, as the RN Lynx are no longer visitors it seems.

No, in Aerospatiale/Eurocopter-speak the first digit simply indicates civil or military variants of the same airframe.

cf AS332/AS532, EC225/EC725, etc.
