View Full Version : Global 6000 'ZS-OAK' sought after Guptas default on loan

Canada lent a family $41 million to buy a luxury jet. Now the jet is missing. (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2018/03/02/canada-lent-a-family-41-million-to-buy-a-luxury-jet-now-the-jet-is-missing)

If you spot a sleek Bombardier Global 6000 business jet sporting tail number ZS-OAK, Canada would love to hear from you.

The jet belonged to South Africa's notorious Gupta family, whose alleged corruption helped trigger the scandals that recently forced President Jacob Zuma out of office. But the Guptas bought the plane with help from a $41 million loan from Export Development Canada, or EDC, Canada's state-owned export-import bank.

EDC was helping Bombardier Inc., the Canadian aerospace firm, land the jet sale. But that turns out to have been a poor bet: EDC now says the family defaulted on the loan in October and still owes the bank $27 million.

And with an arrest warrant outstanding for Ajay Gupta, one of three brothers in the family, there are other worries, too. “There is a very real concern that the aircraft may be used to escape justice or for some unlawful means,” wrote EDC in a recent application to a South African court seeking permission to ground the jet.

Well I don't see how they could get maintenance for it anymore.
If it can't fly what's the point of keeping it?!

This article suggests it may be in St Petersburg where it landed in early February 2018:

I wonder if the crew is getting their pay up front. I hope so. Also imagine whoever sell them fuel will do likewise.

This indicates it left the UAE last Saturday 3rd March ( unlikely to be accurate and true, of course)

2 years ago, it flew from Dubai to India and landed near Nakur : https://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/gupta-private-jet-flies-to-india-20160411

Could it have been headed to India very recently ?

I'm asking again: can such a global 6000 kept flight worthy without active involvement of the manufacturer? Seems highly unlikely

A 41 million loan with no collateral? Seriously?? How do I apply?

Atakacs.

Yes, for awhile it can be, especially if they have a tech onboard, as happens. For awhile longer, if you don’t care.

Why don’t they involve an effective REPO company. Will cost some money but in this part of the world there is additional money flow needed to get, what you wan’t.

Not my source , my post was a few hours ahead of the article and in real time , but CJI details are pretty accurate.

What value does a plane have that no longer has manufacturer support, has an undocumented flight history, is unregistered and potentially has unrecorded maintenance? If the repo men get their hands on this and it returns to the air, would you fly in it? And which muppet in the EDC signed this off? He probably went to the same school as Mark Carney.

Flight "tracking" is only restricted on web based sites which have to comply with FAA BARR requests.
ATC will know where it is and where it has been , so too the private tracking sites.
It doesn't seem to be breaking any aviation laws as such and the flights will no doubt be documented in the log.
Its a mistake to assume its missing or trying to avoid detection. Many a/c are blocked , for many reasons.

I suppose its like having a taxed , insured , MOT'd vehicle [ in the UK ] but having defaulted on the loan payments.
There is nothing to stop the car being driven around until the loan company takes civil action and brings in the clampers.
A nice chunky clamp on the nose wheel and it ain't going anywhere!

For anyone interested in the extent of the BARR list its worth looking at...

ZS-OAK is not listed as it is a recent addition , however , its just one of thousands!

ZS-OAK is on the move , left Dubai south about 10.00GMT heading SW after a rapid climb.

So far as the rather foolish loan (guarantee?) is concerned, anyone familiar with the sad story of the uncompleted 4-aircraft purchase from Bombardier by Palestine Airlines about 18 years ago will recognise the propensity of the Canadians to do whatever's needed to shift a few Bombardier aircraft on to a possibly dodgy buyer.

Through Jeddah airspace and on for Khartoum.
If he hangs a left there , he's probably on a home run.
There is no way this route could have been taken without a formal flight plan , which shows that aviation authorities
have no jurisdiction where civil disputes are concerned.

But now the question is: where is it?

If anyone knows, please tell the South African CAA.......

This is an incident in a developing saga of state capture, criminal trials, corruption, and attempts to evade justice.

News24 reported in February that the Bombardier Global 6 000 business aircraft registered as ZS-OAK, had landed in Russia.

Following this, the plane could no longer be tracked on publicly accessible flight tracker websites and apps.

A couple of us here might beg to differ on that one. ;)

I think it is still parked on the south side at Cotonou.
The latest intel about Banjul now seems a bit suspect , although I may be wrong.
The flight to Banjul from Cotonou seems to have been carried out be a different GLEX which landed there [ Cotonou] a couple of days ago then flew to Banjul where it landed around 1530 today.

"The tracking device on the leased Bombardier Global 6 000 business aircraft, with the tail number ZS-OAK, was switched off so that it could not be traced after the bank terminated the Guptas' lease agreement owing to payments defaults."

Interesting that this still seems to be the general opinion.
The tracking device / Mode S transponder , was never turned off.

Either way ZS-OAK is either at Banjul , or Cotonou and if the court has ordered it to be grounded , then in theory that's where it will stay awaiting eventual storage at Lanseria..

Be interesting to see how this plays out.

Thanks, I just saw it as a GLEX. Anyway, if they owed me that much money, I'd sure be making phone calls and dispensing gratuities to African FBO's to follow these leads.

I would be very surprised if Phil Taylor doesn't know exactly where this a/c is , down to the last few metres.
It has been handled by so many agencies in the last few weeks that every minute of its flight time has been recorded in detail.
Ask the right questions of the right people and all would be revealed irrespective of its inclusion in the BARR list.

Then there was one......

Having left Benin , Jet Magic's Global Ex is about to land Marakesh , so by my reckoning that leaves just one GLEX at Cotonou , south side.
