View Full Version : Are there Bots on Jet Blast?

With the Brexit thread closed now may be an appropriate time to ask, are there Bots posting on this site?

This article from the New York Times suggests that many Bots are posting regularly on Twitter.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/19/technology/russian-bots-school-shooting.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=a-lede-package-region&region=top-news&WT.nav=top-news

One hour after news broke about the school shooting in Florida last week, Twitter accounts suspected of having links to Russia released hundreds of posts taking up the gun control debate....
“This is pretty typical for them, to hop on breaking news like this,” said Jonathon Morgan, chief executive of New Knowledge, a company that tracks online disinformation campaigns. “The bots focus on anything that is divisive for Americans. Almost systematically.”

One of the most divisive issues in the nation is how to handle guns, pitting Second Amendment advocates against proponents of gun control. And the messages from these automated accounts, or bots, were designed to widen the divide and make compromise even more difficult.

The article links to this site
https://dashboard.securingdemocracy.org/

which seeks to do an analysis of twitter activity and identify particular themes and language which might be Bot sourced.

The researchers zeroed in on Twitter accounts posting information that was in step with material coming from well-known Russian propaganda outlets. To spot an automated bot, they looked for certain signs, like an extremely high volume of posts or content that conspicuously matched hundreds of other accounts.

One of markers of Bot activity are links to conspiracy theories. Jet Blast has plenty of those!

Also, we see a high level of highly repetitive content which frequently doesn't answer points. Where answers to points are made they are often so 'pat' as to be virtually algorithmic. e.g. References from the Guardian, the (not so Independent) and the BBC for example tend not to be answered but dismissed by virtue of their source.

Jet Blast posts do not count towards ones overall post total and many potential bots have clearly little posting history outside of Jet Blast. Some very low count posters tend to focus exclusively on the Jet Blast Brexit thread. These might also be Bots.

The Bots focus on anything that is divisive, almost systematically. Could it be true, could the Bots have spread from twitter to JetBlast?

The Twitter bots supporting #brexit seem to have disappeared. It is assumed that this is because nobody is paying them any more.

I have my suspicions, not just the Brexit thread.

Edited to add: This is scary, https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/20/technology/social-media-impostor-accounts.html

I mean... if there were, they would eventually be harder and harder to tell apart from real people.

But one thing is for sure... they would all go to robot hell.

I personally prefer the phrase "sock puppets" from the eerily prescient 2016-17 season of Homeland.

It gives a better feel for the often "false-flag" nature of what they are doing, and reminds us that, really, they are mostly actual human trollers - who can, with rational thought, be defeated, rather than a mechanistic, deterministic "other."

My sense, from reading JB for a couple of years, is that 1) most of the posters here have real personalities and backgrounds, and while a believable "legend" could just be good spy craft, that 2) it is (sorry, mods) simply not a wide-enough audience to be worth that much effort, compared to much larger and more general sites. Just not enough bang for the buck to be worth targeting, in the larger scheme of things.

Some of the posts here may reflect "seepage" of weird ideas and talking points picked up from other sites that are being corrupted by sock puppets, however.

Either way, the Russian trolls are pro-Trump, hence my earlier comment. No pro-Hillary stuff came out of St Petersburg, so that theory would seem to fall flat at the starting gate.

Not sure they are pro-Trump, rather anti-Clinton. The Russian operation started before Trump had even declared and at first it was pro Bernie Sanders.

Well spotted Ron. I don't start threads very often, I wouldn't want to start one and have it die of neglect.

I am to an extent playing devils advocate here and this might be taken as my way of critiquing the quality of the posting which is often repetitive and very uncreative.

I'm inclined to agree, compared to some of the active technical sites I look at JB has very few daily posts. What we actually encounter are some very rabid supporters of certain themes. And some of these seem certain that by posting on JB they are influencing the real world!

My personal take on JB is, by looking on here I can get a quick distillation of what's trending in papers such as the Telegraph, the Mail and outlets such as Fox News and Guido Fawkes. I don't have to deliver clicks to these sites and I don't have to wade through their content. I'm happier that way.

I for one can sense a haze of difference between Trolls, BOTs and fake news as terms. but we probably don't all have the same understanding so I tread lightly in their use :)

if I sense a troll I stop asking directed questions. If it's a BOT I'm never sure and don't care anyway, except that it tends to ruin threads with the same old arguments .

Fake News gets me the most when it is fed into a roaring fire on the TV to the talking heads. In spite of some really good host intelligence on places like CNN they always seem to mess it up by calling on their one-sided panels to address a question as if it must be true and what do you think about it?

I finally learned to turn off the sound and just read the moving banners at the bottom of a page.

Like Steve Bannon says each panelist is just another opinion in a poll of zero credibility.

and that goes for Trump as well, since he listens to nobody before he tweets

And there are, of course, those who make their (apparent) case so ineptly as to do it more harm than good. Politeness prevents me from being too specific.

However, it could turn out that some of these are Strawman Sockpuppets.
A strawman sockpuppet is a false flag pseudonym created to make a particular point of view look foolish in order to generate negative sentiment against it. The intended effect is to discredit more rational arguments made for the same position.

Hmmm.

Strawman/Sockpuppet? Bot/Troll?

Have you been using one of those programs that put two unconnected terms together to generate a new, meaningless phrase?

Well spotted Dave, you caught me. And I also generated Wiki pages to give the phrases spurious definitions

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sockpuppet_(Internet)#Strawman_sockpuppet

Strawman sockpuppet

A strawman sockpuppet is a false flag (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_flag) pseudonym created to make a particular point of view (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perspective_(cognitive)) look foolish or unwholesome in order to generate negative sentiment against it. Strawman sockpuppets typically behave in an unintelligent, uninformed, or bigoted (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bigoted) manner and advance "straw man (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_man)" arguments that their puppeteers can easily refute. The intended effect is to discredit (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outgroup_homogeneity_bias) more rational arguments made for the same position.Such sockpuppets behave in a similar manner to Internet trolls (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_troll).
A particular case is the Concern troll (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_troll#Concern_troll), a false flag (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_flag) pseudonym created by a user whose actual point of view is opposed to the one that the sockpuppet claims to hold. The concern troll posts in Web forums devoted to its declared point of view and attempts to sway the group's actions or opinions while claiming to share their goals, but with professed "concerns". The goal is to sow fear, uncertainty and doubt (aka FUD (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fear_uncertainty_and_doubt)) within the group

No idea whether there are Bots on here, but fairly certain that there's a staff writer for the Guardian who posts fairly regularly as he seems to believe that it's the only newspaper in the whole world that publishes the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth....

Here's Time magazine on the Internet Research Agency, the famous St. Petersburg troll factory that also 'manages' large quantities of Bots.

Russian Troll Farm Workers Say Mueller Indictments Are True | Time (http://time.com/5165805/russian-troll-factory-mueller-indictments/)

Along with producing social media supporting Donald Trumpís candidacy and disparaging Clinton, the Internet Research Agency purchased online advertisements using identities stolen from Americans and staged political rallies while posing as American political activists, the indictment alleges. The agency also paid people in the U.S. to promote or ridicule the candidates, the document states.

Analysts and journalists have found that some of the Russian-run accounts accrued national followings in the United States, while far-right Americans and several members of Trumpís team retweeted posts created in St. Petersburg.

It reportedly used doctored videos to spread false reports about a supposed Islamic State attack on a chemical plant in Louisiana and a purported case of Ebola in the state of Georgia. Seeking to sow division and mistrust ahead of the U.S. election, the agency apparently whipped up a fake video of an African-American woman being shot dead by a white police officer in Atlanta.

brilliant wiki piece. I once generated a false wiki to demonstrate to students at uni that they should not trust online data when doing research.
