So far as I can tell, this week is the 100th anniversary of formally constituted atmospheric research flying in aeroplanes.
The first Royal Air Force Meteorological Flight (1918/1919): Part 1 - Booth - 2010 - Weather - Wiley Online Library (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/wea.528/pdf)
Much of it goes on nowadays of course, and the present British organisation, FAAM, seems to be continuing the tradition extremely competently. But it's interesting to see how it all started.
